Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A pair of stamped copper-alloy sheet-metal mounts, probably dating from the Late Medieval or post-Medieval periods. The mounts are of very similar appearance, each taking the form of a four-petalled flower head. At the centre is a raised pellet surrounded by four sub-circular petals; a rim of two ridges and an internal groove forms a perimeter border around the mount, with the point of a petal protruding from each of the four external angles. On the reverse, both mounts have traces of iron corrosion from an otherwise missing central rivet. One mount has a light green patina, while t…

A cast lead-alloy button, probably dating from the Late Medieval period. The upper surface of the plano-convex head of the button is decorated in high relief. A boss marks the centre of the head; this is surrounded by six smaller, equally-spaced bosses. The spaces between the bosses are occupied by a lower pattern of ridges and pellets. An integral loop extends from the centre point of the head's flat underside. A small portion of the button has been lost. Dimensions: 26mm diameter, 14.2mm deep (front of head to back of loop). Weight: 9.93g. Similar cast buttons are illustrated …

A copper-alloy strap loop of Medieval date. The frame is roughly rectangular in plan, with a slight increase in width, towards the vertical outer side. The other sides are of rectangular section, the shorter vertical one also pierced by a central rivet hole containing part of the copper-alloy rivet. Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy bracelet of probable Late Roman date. The artefact is complete but slightly distorted, probably as a result of post-depositional damage. The bracelet is of penannular form and of simple construction, having been made from a single length of square-sectioned wire which has been twisted into a 'cable' form. This decoration does not extend to the terminals, where the ends of the wire taper into two overlapping points. Dimensions: 84.1mm wide, 71.1mm deep (terminals to back), 2.8mm thick. Weight: 10.29g.

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of uncertain date. The piece represents the distal end of the blade. The narrow, slender artefact is parallel-sided along much of its length, tapering to a blunt point. The cross section is lenticular, with a suggestion of a central ridge on each face. The surfaces are heavily corroded and the break appears to have occurred in antiquity. Dimensions: 48.6mm long, up to 9.2mm wide and 2.5mm thick. Weight: 4.82g. It is possible that this is the tip of an implement such as a dirk or rapier; however, its slender form suggests it is more likely to be…

Object type: LAMP HANGER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy lamp hanger of Medieval date. The artefact has been made in two pieces. The uppermost element consists of a vertical, oval-sectioned arm, the top of which flares into a loop. At the base of this arm is a spigot, which sits within a socket at the centre of the second element. This second element is set at a right angle to the first. Two rectangular-sectioned arms flare horizontally outwards from the central point, one being straight, the other curving inwards at its point. A third arm extends backwards from the centre, the three arms together forming a 'Y shape'. This …
