An incomplete post-Medieval cast white metal spherical animal 'crotal' bell (1600-1800 AD). The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is 10.93mm high, 9.21mm wide and 2.86.mm thick and has circular perforation. The upper and lower hemispheres are divided equally by a horizontal circumferential joining rib. At either side of the suspension loop there is a circular sound hole. Prior to being broken there were two sound holes integral with a slit in the lower hemisphere. An enamelled copper-alloy button, probably dating from the 17th century. The head of the button is domed, with an integral loop at the centre of the hollow underside. The upper surface bears the relief-moulded design of a lion running right, a raised area of ground below. The field above the lion contains a white enamel inset; the field below contains dark blue enamel, as do two separate areas above the tail and head respectively. Dimensions: 25mm diameter, 10.2mm deep (top of head to back of loop). Weight: 7.17g.
