Brownish yellow flint flake. It is a by-product of the shaping of a larger irregular lump of flint, so that regular shaped pieces can be taken off it to work into tools. The piece removed from the parent nodule (or core) is irregular in outline and is termed a flake. There are no indications that it has been subsequently worked or used once removed from its core. A feature of this flake is that on the more irregular face it shows evidence of other flakes having been previously removed from different directions on the core before this piece was detached. This suggests that it was not…

This is an Iron Age silver coin produced in NW France in c. 70-60BC. Coins of this type are attributed to the Suessiones tribe. The type is a slight variant of the "et au sanglier" type and published in the standard catalogues: Delestree and Tache (2002), Nouvel Atlas des Monnaies Gauloises, volume I, no. 197; Scheers (1977), Traite de Numismatique Celtique, volume II, cf. no. 328. It shows a male head on the front and a stylised lion on the back and was derived from early coins issued in the south of France and, ultimately from Roman silver coins. Reddish brown flint blade. Probably local to the area where it was found, originating from the glacial clay or perhaps river gravels. It is a by-product of the shaping of a larger irregular lump of flint, so that regular shaped pieces can be taken off it to work into tools. The longer than narrow, parallel sided shape is characterised as a blade. In some circumstances the blades are then 'retouched' by finely working the edge in a deliberate way to produce tools or sometimes they can be just used as they are without further working, for cutting or scraping. This one does not betra…

Fragment of the edge of a greenstone muller, triangular in plan, C-shaped in profile and sub-rectangular in section. The upper surface is worn but rising at a slight angle to suggest a convex top of the muller, the side edge is quite rounded, and the base has been ground flat through use. The profile of the fragment and the smooth base suggests it may have been part of a muller. This is one of a group of cobbles found in the same area, made of various materials, that were used as domestic artefacts such as mullers, rubbers and whetstones. All of these would be at home on a Middle Bron…
