A cast copper alloy Roman knee brooch dating from 150 - 250 AD. The brooch has a convex bow, wide at the top and tapering to the foot which is a half round disc which juts forwards. Part of the catchplate survives behind. The head is tubular wings holding a copper alloy axis bar and with a slot for the missing pin. Above is an integral head loop. The reverse of the bow is hollow. Compare 1242 and 478 on page 335 of Hattatt.

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman brooch, a Headstud variant - Thealby type dating from 100 - 200 AD. The fragment consists of the head, the wings, and the tubular hinge mechanism. The upper bow has a concave surface with raised edges which continue to the top of the brooch. The wings have four vertical ridges on either side. On the reverse of the wings, the tubular hinge mechanism survives, but the axis bar and pin are missing. The reverse of the upper bow is concave at the very top and flattens out rather quickly. The surface is mid greyish-green. This brooch dates to the 2nd Century AD. See: Hattatt, p333 and compare YORYM-5FD193. NLM-D54953 is another example and the record cites the fact that "Over 80% of Thealby brooches known to Hattatt (1987, page 122, fig. 41 no. 945) are from north of the Humber, with the greatest concentration in Yorkshire and Humberside." This type of brooch is named for the 'type site' of Thealby Mine, (now) in North Lincolnshire.

A copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch dating from 75 - 175 AD. The trumpet head is decorated with enamel. A vertical line divides the head in half and there is a arch shaped cell of blue enamel on each side. There is a pair of yellow triangles above and a pair below. The remaining area have faded red enamel. There is a triple collar either side of the acanthus button which only decorates the front of the bow. The lower bow is faceted, triangular in section with a row of triangular opposed cells of red enamel on each side. The foot is moulded as a lion's paw or maybe a half acanthus, with four toes. The underneath of the foot has a ring cell round a central raised dot, but the enamel does not survive. The catchplate reaches from the acanthus button to the foot and is compete except for the turnover. An integral loop on the back of the head holds the spring of six turns, but the pin is broken. A wire head loop extends into the inside of the spring, forming the axis bar. A band of copper alloy is wrapped round the head loop to for the constriction. The band is decorated with two longitudinal lines and has a gap at the back. A very similar brooch is number 1528 on page 327 of Hattatt which has the same pattern of enamelling. The brooch has a bright green even patina.

A complete cast copper-alloy cosmetic pestle of probable Romano-British date. It is curved in form, oval shaped in section expanding towards a rounded tip. At the opposite end is an integrally cast circular loop with grooved collar and central circular aperture. There appears to be no evidence for decoration and the entire object has a mid green patina. It measures 50.65mm in length, 6.50mm in width, 6.19mm in thickness (10.75mm in thickness/height at suspension loop) and 8.90g in weight.
This is a cosmetic pestle designed for use in conjunction with a mortar. Similar examples are noted from Suffolk (e.g. SF-F3B0B1, SF-CC55F0, NMS-636A77, SF-B36C81, SF8618) and suggest a probable Roman date for the current object, c.43-410 AD.
