Object type: PENCIL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Warwickshire

A corroded cast lead rod, perhaps a pencil of medieval or post-medieval date. The object is a long, thin cylinder. It has a circular cross-section with one pointed tip; the other end has been flattened into a wedge shape with rounded corners. This latter has been twisted slightly in profile. This artefact is plain and is a grey/white colour with a heavy patina which covers all other surfaces. Similar pencils have been recorded on this database, e.g. NARC-88EE88, and can be seen illustrated in Egan (1998, 271; fig. 209).

A cast copper alloy Post Medieval mount. The object is in the shape of an acorn, with a length of stem projecting to the side of the acorn cup. The upper half of the mount represents the acorn and is separated from the lower half by two horizontal, parallel incised lines. The lower half of the body represents the acorn cup. There are two integral rivets on the reverse, one broken and one bent. This object was probably for mounting onto a strap, either a personal belt or a harness strap. Compare YORYM-258015.

A copper-alloy mount of Early-Medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) date. The mount is roughly square, with a frame around a central panel decorated with a 'chip-carved' design in which a combination of V-shaped grooves and ridges defines a zoomorphic pattern. At the base of this panel is the head frame of a bird, aligned left to right (in red on the annotated photograph). The head is angular in appearance and contains a recessed, sub-rectangular eye. The upper half of the projecting beak has a straight, angled top side, vertical right hand end (defined by the edge of the panel) and a concav…

A copper-alloy mount of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. The head of the mount is sub-circular and of flat section. The upper surface is decorated with a 'chip carved' design which retains much of its original gilding. At the centre of this design there is a triple-stranded, interlaced quatrefoil. This quatrefoil is entwined with a single-stranded rectangle, on each of the four corners of which there is an angled loop whose outer limit projects beyond the edges of the otherwise circular head. The final element of the design is a ropework border which extends around the circumferen…

Cast copper alloy zoomorphic or possible anthropomorphic mount or stud of medieval date (1200 - 1450 AD). The stud is irregular in plan being broadly rectangular in shape with a small triangular projection from the lower edge. In profile the stud is D shaped and in cross section it is broadly convex. The front face of the mount is domed whilst the rear is concave. From the centre of the rear face a small oval cross sectioned stud extends. This is broken and distorted / bent as a result of movement in the ploughsoil. The front face of the mount is decorated with cast and incised decor…

An incomplete silver mount in the shape of two hearts arranged as a mirror image, with the bottom point facing outwards. One pint is missing while the other is worn. The hearts are defined using etched zig-zag lines, a practise commonly referred to as wriggle-work and used frequently on pewter during the 17th Century. Both rivets remain in place, although one is broken, while the other is bent. Both are square in section. Mounts of this style are probably casket mounts, rather than designed for personal adornment, and date from the Late 16th to 17th centuries AD. The mount is 21mm …

Two large joining body fragments of a Roman mortarium, probably dating from the late 2nd or 3rd century AD. The mortarium was probably locally made from reddish sandy fabric with quartzite inclusions. While the outside of the sherds is very smooth, the inside is gritty which is typical for all mortaria (Roman household mixing bowls). The characteristic rim is missing which makes it difficult to identify a sub-type for this vessel.
