The earliest mining related tokens known from the British Isles are those circulated by a handful of colliery owners and coal carriers operating in the mid seventeenth century. Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a flake with a retouched edge. The dorsal right margin has two areas of retouch, one at the proximal end, the other central, all worked from the dorsal face. The ventral face has two areas of retouch along the left margin worked from the dorsal face. The flint is cream in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar piece on Page 129 Fig 56 No L96 and Page 127 Fig 55 No L91.which he calls edge trimmed flakes dates to the Neolithic period.
