Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An edge trimmed and notched flake, brown and grey in colour with cream flecks, which has been bi-facially retouched and expediently made. Both lateral margins of the dorsal face exhibit discontinuous retouch with semi-abrupt angle and edge type extent. All retouch possesses sub-parallel morphology. Two notches have been created on the left margin close to the midway point. Further retouch has been undertaken on the lower notch of the ventral face which enhances its form. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p131, Fig 57, L114 which dates to the Neolithic.

A side variant scraper, mid-grey and in colour and patinated , which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently manufactured. The distal end exhibits partial retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and is of long extent. The retouch morphology of this margin is of scaled type. This retouch continues along the entire of the left margin. Cortex remains on approximately 80%+ which together with abrupt retouch to the proximal end aids in comfort when handling. Oval in plan and plano-convex in section and profile. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example onp132, fig 5.118, F5 which…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Post Medieval unifaced cast lead alloy token. Powell Type 2. The token is decorated on one face with a letter H; the other face is undecorated. It measures 17.97mm in diameter and is 1.95 mm thick and weighs 4.20 grams. Lead tokens had a variety of uses and were often made locally; they are therefore difficult to date, but examples with initials are given a general date of c. 1550-1800 AD.

County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An end scraper, mid-grey and brown in colour with cream flecks, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently manufactured. Both lateral margins and distal end have been worked to produce a "nose" form, with the retouch being of continuous distribution with semi-abrupt angle and edge type extent. The lower section of the dorsal face has been thinned (possibly along a line of weakness within the flint) to aid in handling. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on p126, fig50, 10 which dates to the Early Neolithic.

A complete Medieval to Post Medieval unifaced cast lead token. Probably Powell Type 3: Segments. The surface of the token is differentially worn, but it is likely that the design intended is a series of lines radiating from the centre in a wedge-shaped pattern. The central cross is more visible than the other radiating lines. It measures 22.89 mm in diameter and 3.02 mm thick and weighs 8.44grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were often made and distributed locally; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Examples with simple designs, such as this one, are giv…

The proximal end and right margin (close to the proximal end), of the dorsal face exhibit partial retouch with an abrupt angle and is of edge type in extent (backed), possibly for hafting purposes. A complete Medieval to Post Medieval unifaced cast lead token. Powell Type 14. The token is decorated on one face with a long cross and a pellet in each quarter; the other face is undecorated. It measures 16.60 mm in diameter and 1.80 mm thick and weighs 2.45 grams. Lead tokens were easy to produce and widely circulated; examples with long cross and pellet designs were originally meant to emulate Medieval long cross pennies, however they continued in use throughout both the Medieval and Post Medieval period. Therefore, a general date of c. 1250-1800 AD is suggested for this type.

An end and side "nose" scraper which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently manufactured. The distal end of the dorsal face exhibits continuous retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and is of long extent. The retouch morphology of this margin is of sub-parallel type. Similar retouch continues along the left margin, following a sharp break in angle, just short of the proximal end. The angle formed at the intersect of the distal end and left margin gives a "nose" form. A cortex cover of 70%+ together with abrupt retouch of the right margin allows for comfortable handling. Bond…
