Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular flake of tertiary debitage dated to the Neolithic period (3500 - 2000 BC). The flake shows knapping / working in two different direction with neat flake scars present on the dorsal and thicker edge, suggesting this flake has been removed from an area that has been roughed out. The ventral face is flaked in the opposite direction, the striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly present on one of the long edges. The long curved exterior edge of the waste flake has been reworked using small abrupt retouch which is distinctly different to the damage / flaking from p…

An irregular flake of tertiary debitage dated to the Neolithic period (3500 - 2000 BC). The exterior edge of the waste flake has been reworked using small abrupt retouch which is distinctly different to the damage / flaking from plough roll. The dorsal face exhibits numerous flakes in one direction whilst the ventral is flaked in the opposite direction, the striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly present on one of the long edges. This form of reworking of waste materials is relatively common in assemblages from the Marches. The flint is a mottled grey colour. The flak…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete chert blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint blade is irregular in plan being broadly crescent shaped; in cross section it is triangular (crested). The bulb of percussion is present on the ventral (lower) face but the striking platform has been removed by abrasion. The dorsal face has been reworked with the exterior curved edge being retouched. The chert is a mid creamy grey mottled colour. It has been rolled in the ploughsoil resulting in damage to some of the edges. The chert is likely to have come from a seam present along the welsh border.…

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete cast lead-alloy post-Medieval button. The button is has a slightly dome circular head and has been cast in one piece; the casting seam is evident on the reverse of the head and on the shank. The shank has not been filed clean following casting and the shank appears to have been misaligned during casting. The head of the button has a central raised circular boss then two outer rings of crimped decoration around the rim of the button. The shank is teardrop shaped with a single circular piercing for attachment. Based on similar examples this button is dated to the 17th cent…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper-alloy Cruciform brooch of Early Medieval date. The brooch is Anglo-Saxon in cultural terms. Only the foot of the brooch survives and is in a poor condition of preservation with loss of all the original patina and signs of bronze disease. Despite the poor condition some of the original design detail can be discerned and it is clear that the terminal is in the form of a stylised horse's head, as is typical of this class of brooch. The horse's head has prominent eyes, possibly formed as spirals and clearly also had prominent nostrils, although the detail on this…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broad flake of pale grey flint with cream flecks. It has been struck from the pebble cortex. On the opposite margin there is a ragged notch and though this would by itself be unconvincing as deliberatly worked for a task; there is a patch of ventral gloss suggesting that the notch was used and friction with the worked material occurred. Butler(2005) illustrates a similar tool on page 186, fig 76, 6.

Flint graver, sub-rectangular in plan (though asymmetrical with a point on the upper left) and profile, and sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face, there is fine retouch on the upper two-thirds of the left margin. The left margin has a distal point. The semi-abrupt retouch on the right margin could have been carried out as backing. The left margin has an inward curve that shows some resemblance to a notch. On the ventral face, there is fine retouch at the distal end to the left of the point. The flint is is dark olive-green. There is no cortex, so it is classed as tertiary. M…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stout, elongated flake of dark grey flint with opaque cream inclusions. It is heavily worked and likely reflaked during service, changing its shape. At discard the right margin is boldly flaked like a scraper, whilst the same edge, but on the ventral surface is thinned with invasive step fractured removals. There is a little too from the opposite margin of a more feathered nature, The distal end of this slug shaped piece looks like a blunted point with heavy use gloss. This may be a kind of drill or fabricator, at the point of exhaustion. Mercer illustrates a similar piercer on pag…

A patch of this remains on the somewhat plunging distal end. the proximal end has been truncated at right angles and the 2 dorsal ridges are straight and parallel giving an overall neat appearance. Without formal retouch the sharp lateral margins hve been utilised; particularly the right one, which has use wear and diffuse ventral gloss from friction with the worked material. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and very small post-Medieval copper-alloy book fitting (c. 1550-c. 1650 AD). The fitting is in the form of a clasp with a hook. It is made from sheet copper-alloy and is sub rectangular in plan. It has parallel side and flares slightly at the attachment end to form a 'fish-tail' shape. The opposite end narrows abruptly to form a hook, the tip of which is missing. Close to the attachment end there is an off-centre circular hole, about 2.0mm in diameter. This has been pierced through from the front and is burred at the rear. At the front, closer to the hook, there is a sh…

A thin flake of dark brown translucent flint with cream flecks. Only the proximal end remains with the remainder apparently deliberately removed with a dihedral snap. The lateral margins are wavy, as is the dorsal ridge. There is a little platform preparation with flakelets removed. Near to this in the left margin is an abruptly worked notch. It may be, given the thinness and flatness of the piece that given the right orientation it could be used as a hafting notch with the trimming leaving a symmetrical transverse arrow head. Otherwise a simple notched piece is illustrated by Butler(2…

A base sherd from a Saxo-Norman coarse ware, possibly a bowl or cooking pot. The exact nature of the fabric and the method of manufacture are unclear from the rally record and photograph, though the fabric appears to be dark grey with numerous gritty inclusions, either naturally occuring in the clay or added as a temper to give structural strength to the clay during the forming process. Heavily tempered clays like this one are particularly suited to hand building, rather than wheel throwing. The sherd probably dates from c.800-1200.
