Flint blade, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face, the left and right margins are sharp. It has been snapped at the proximal end. On the ventral face, there is a small section of retouch on the upper right margin, i.e. towards the distal end. Striations can be seen on the ventral face towards the left margin. The flint is grey. Flint blade, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face, the left and right margins are sharp. There is possible retouch on the lower right margin, i.e. towards the proximal end. It has been snapped at the distal end. On the ventral face, there is nibbled retouch on the upper right margin, i.e. towards the distal end. The flint is grey. There is no cortex, so it is classed as tertiary. Mercer (1981) shows a similar example on page 129, Figure 56, Number L103.

Flint awl, sub-rectangular in plan, sub-triangular in profile and section. On the dorsal face, the distal end and left margin have a series of denticulations. The far right of the distal end and upper right margin forms a point which has been created by retouch on either side. The medial section of the right margin is sharp but unretouched. The proximal end is truncated. The flint is dark grey. There is no cortex, so it is classed as tertiary. Bond (2004) shows an awl that is similar on page 143, Figure 5.129, Number F156.

Flint blade, sub-rectangular in plan, convex-concave in profile and sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face the right margin is sharp but not retouched. There is semi-abrupt retouch along the upper left margin just below the distal end. The flint is brown but fresher in apearance in the third closer to the proximal end. There is a small area of cortex at the distal end, so it is classed as secondary. It is likely to have derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer (1981) shows a similar example, described as an edge-trimmed flake, on page 131, Figure 57, Number L116.

Flint microlith, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, and sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face, there is abrupt retouch along the entire right margin and upper (i.e. distal) third of the left margin. The medial section of the left margin is sharp. There is a section of slight retouch on the left margin towards the proximal end. The flint is pale grey with dark flecks. There is no cortex, so it is classed as tertiary. Flint microburin, sub-triangular in plan and bi-convex in section. On the dorsal face, there is fine retouch on the right margin, most clearly along the medial section. The left margin shows possible retouch or damage. There is a sharp point on the distal tip close to the left margin. There is retouch on either side of this point. On the left margin, close to the distal tip, is a tiny notch. The flint is dark olive-green. There is no cortex, so it is classed as tertiary. Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint scraper which could be described as a broken chunk which has come off the face of a core. It may have been semi-circular originally but a section is now missing and it was possibly a discoidal scraper originally. Retouching is evident around half of the remaining edge opposite the area where the section has broken off. The flint is dark grey in colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond [2004] illustrates a similar example on page 125, Type 5, No. 5.113 and Butler[2005] illustrates a similar example on page 166, fig 70, No.11 which are dated to the late N…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint side scraper with striking platform at proximal and retouch on the edge opposite the proximal as viewed from dorsal side. This could be the distal end. It could also be described as an end scraper as the retouch is on the edge opposite the striking platform and if the flint is held with the proximal end on then it is a side scraper. It has been made from a hard hammered flake. The flint is dark grey in colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Butler [2005] illustrates a similar example on page 166, fig 70, no. 4 which is dated to the late Neolithic.

Stone single-sided rubber or muller, oval in plan and plano-convex in profile with one flattened utilised face on the base of the stone and two pecked indentations on either side of the rubber, and one in the centre of the upper face, for ease of handling. It is ideal for right-handed use and a medium sized hand (Dr Roger Taylor pers comm). The muller is flat and smooth on the face that was used for rubbing, and convex on the opposite face, where it was held and pushed across a base for grinding. The muller would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the sto…

Stone double-sided rubber or muller, oval in plan and an ovate rectangle in profile with two flattened utilised faces on opposing longitudinal sides. Both faces of the muller are flat and smooth as they were used for rubbing, but one side may have originally been convex so that it could be held and pushed across a base for grinding. The muller would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones to make flour. The rubber has been worked from a beach cobble of volcanic tuff / agglomerate made up of hardened volcanic ash/lava fragments. It is closely compa…

Flint saw, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face, there is fine retouch along both edges, creating serration. The proximal end has been retouched. The flint is black with small white patches. There is secondary cortex, which is rough so may indicate a nodular origin. It is possible that the flint came from Beer Head. Bond (2004) shows a similar saw on page 143, Figure 5.129, Number 149.

Chert arrowhead, diamond shaped in plan, convex-concave in profile and bi-convex in section. On the dorsal face, there is bevelled retouch on the top right and lower left margins. On the ventral face, it is truncated, or retouched, on the upper right margin. There is semi-abrupt retouch on the lower right margin, which means that this section has been bifacially retouched.
