Large worn rim sherd from a wheel made Roman food preparation bowl, or mortarium, probably dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. A large part of the rim and part of the body survives. The mortarium was made from a pale white/creamy coloured- fabric with smaller sandy inclusions. The fabric now has a pale sandy hue and could possibly be Nene Valley white ware. On the internal face some of the dark grits can be seen; these were included to aid grinding. The surface on the outside of the vessel is even and smooth. The heavy rim is of the hammer headed type, suggesting a later date, i.e.…

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy object of Post-medieval date. Reddish-brown patina. Circular in plan. D-shaped in section. Linear scratches on the flat surface may be a motif. This object may be a small coin weight. However, coin weights of this size and shape are uncommon. An alternative use may be a gaming piece. There is no visible scar on the reverse to suggest that it was a button, or that it was ever attached to another component. By recording this as a 'coin weight', rather than 'unidentified object', it allows experts in that field to review this record and make changes if necessary.

Flint flake which has been used as a scraper at both ends. The original flake has been snapped off at the distal end with some signs of retouch for possible use as an end scraper. At the proximal end there is retouch on the dorsal face. Retouch is apparent on right hand margin ventral view. No sign of cortex remaining.
