Cast copper alloy disc brooch of Roman date (80-250 AD). The brooch is broadly circular in plan. The front face is slightly relatively flat with a raised cast design and central cast hole (diameter: 1.9mm). Little remains of the upper surface due to corrosion and abrasion. The deign seems be centred on concentric raised circular panels, the outer possibly being a wreath. Presumably through the central hole a projecting rosette or similar applied ornament was fitted. There is no evidence of a gilt or silvered applied surface. The circumferential edge of the brooch has a raised ridge ar…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flake with hinge fracture at distal end. Retouch cuts through earlier patination on upper left hand margin dorsal view. Reworking can be seen on right hand dorsal view which has resulted in use as a knife. A little cortex remains at lower right dorsal view.
Flint is chalk colour through patination on dorsal view, and light grey colour on ventral view and was likely derived from a local beach pebble.
Bond illustrates a similar example on page 145, fig 5.131, No.25 which is dated to the late Neolithic.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Post medieval copper alloy book mount, probably of 17th or 18th century date
The mount is near-complete (with a length of 50.7mm and a weight of 12.4g). The mount is made of sheet copper alloy (1.8mm - 2.8mm thick) and was attached by a single rivet positioned near the end (2.6mm diameter). The rivet hole has been punched through, rather than drilled. The attachment end is straight, before the sides diverge slightly before converging to a rectangular panel (with a maximum width of 26.8mm), near the catch. The catch is distorted (with a depth of 2.6mm). No applied decoration is now…

Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester-one-piece type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is complete (with a length of 50.6mm, a depth of 16.5mm and a weight of 4.7g). The spring is positioned behind short wings (with a width for the spring of 15.2mm and for the wings of 10.8mm) and the chord is tensioned above the head with a rearward claw. The spring coils three times each side of the claw. The circular sectioned wire for the spring gradually thins along the pin (with a maximum diameter of 2.0mm thinning to 0.7mm near the tip). The bow is of sub-rectangular section near…

Roman copper alloy plate brooch of Umbonate type and of 2nd century AD date
The brooch is damaged and torn but is near-complete, missing some of the periphery and the pin (with a surviving length of 41.1mm, a depth of 10.2mm and a weight of 7.7g). The missing pin was hinged between twin lugs, positioned beneath the damaged chain-loop. The remnants of the pin and axis bar suggest they were made of iron. The central area on the rear of the brooch is dished and the eroded catch-plate survives as a stub on the rear rounded basal lug. The periphery of the brooch appears to have been enh…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st to 2nd century AD date
The brooch is near-complete, missing the spring and the chain-loop (with a length of 45.1mm, a depth of 18.9mm and a weight of 5.1g). The missing spring would have coiled around a single pierced lug on the rear of the head. Remnants of iron corrosion indicate that the axis bar was iron and suggest the spring may also have been iron. The head is near-circular (9.1mm wide) with the remnants of a broken chain-loop at the apex. The upper bow is of D-shaped section (6.6mm wide and 4.6mm thick at the head) …

A cast copper alloy sub rectangular strap plate (probably dating from the 14th Century AD). The design comprises a series of punched dots, creating crude circles and crescents and the method employed has resulted in a mild raised impression on the reverse. There is a single rivet hole at one end, located in the middle of the circle design. A corner next to the open rivet hole has been bent forward. The surviving rivet is located a the opposite end. It is flush with the decorated surface and a small portion extends on the reverse but has been broken off. The fitting has a green and ora…

Copper alloy bell, probably of post medieval date, c. 18th century
The bell is near complete, missing the clapper with some damage around the top (with a length of 58mm and a weight of 80.9g). The integral rectangular loop is irregular (13mm tall, 14.4mm wide and 6.5m thick); enclosing an oval perforation (8.3mm long and 5.6mm wide). The apex of the loop on one side is heavily worn with a concave facet. The top of the bell has two circular perforations (3.6mm and 3.9mm diameter) surrounded by iron corrosion, presumably where a wire was attached to the missing clanger. The other side…

A post-Medieval to Modern knob, possibly from a vessel (c. 1600-c. 1850),
It is moulded at the front and has a flower head design consisting of a central pellet within an annulet at the centre surrounded by eight petals. It has a waist at the rear which then expands to a domed sub-circular shape in plan. Corroded iron is attached to the back of this part.
The surfaces are grey with off-white corrosion products.
Maximum diameter: 18.4mm; thickness: 17.2mm. Weight: 14.35g.
