Object type: NUT CRACKERS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A pair of cast copper-alloy nutcrackers dating to the 17th or 18th century (1600-1800). The nutcrackers consist of two arms conjoined at the top by an integrally cast hinge with a rolled copper alloy axis bar. Each arm is similar in its cast decoration; this consists of a series of horizontal bars on the exterior surfaces of the upper arm, descending (and tapering in width and thickness) to two small sections of turned 'barley sugar twist' areas separated by raised circumferential ribs and terminating in small pointed knops, which echo the twisted decoration above. On the inner surf…

A cast lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of possible Roman or Medieval date (50-400 / 1200-1500). The repair is small but complete being plough rolled; in plan it is broadly oval (ovoid); in cross section an abraded H shape. The mend is heavily abraded and also covered with a relatively thick brownish grey patina. No pottery survives within the repair. From the surface patina a Roman date is preferred however other artefacts found within the locale would indicate a Medieval date
The vessel repairs measures 18.8mm length, 14.3mm width is 7.8mm thick and weighs 13.4 grams.

A cast lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of possible Roman or Medieval date (50-400 / 1200-1500). The repair is complete but plough rolled; in plan it is broadly oval; in cross section an abraded H shape. The mend has been formed from a sheet of lead alloy which has been rolled and then inserted into the hole in a pottery vessel; a clear spiral pattern can be observed on the interior and exterior faces of the mend confirming this method of manufacture. A small undiagnostic sherd of pottery survives within one of the H shaped grooves. The pottery is hire fired and grey in colour, thi…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Five blades of varying lengths and thicknesses of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The sections of the blades vary, some are triangular (crested) whilst others are flatter lentoid shaped. All have multiple linear facets on the dorsal faces and conchoidal fractures on the ventral. Some are snapped, others still possess their bulbs of percussion / striking platforms. Some also have small areas of cortex present, suggesting they come from the outer surface of prepared cores. The majority of the blades are plough rolled and have thick white surface patinas. Some of the long edges ha…

Object type: CAME
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy fragment of a lead alloy window came of post Medieval date (1500-1800). In plan the repair is broadly oval and is an abraded H shaped in cross section. The upper edge is rounded and presumably a terminal, although possibly a junction whose edge is rolled over to form a thickened edge. A junction would be the recorders preferred identification. On the upper surface a sub-rectangular shield is present. No glass survives.
The came fragment measures 15.9mm length, 12.5mm width is 5.2mm thick and weighs 3.28 grams. The internal H shaped section is 2.5mm wide.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy hinged two-piece Colchester derivative (Dolphin) brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are complete and cylindrical. A longitudinal hole is present to take the axis bar. It is filled with orange iron corrosion (rust), presumably from an iron axis bar. At the centre of the wings, on the reverse face is a vertical slit. The pin is lost. The bow head of the brooch is relatively hump-like, and slightly angular. The bow is an angular D shape in cross section. The bow tapers along its length to an abraded rounded point / foot. The catch plate on the reverse f…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch of Early Medieval date (Anglo-Saxon or Anglian in culture). The main frame of the brooch is complete, although the area (perhaps a constriction) where the pin would have rotated and the pin are missing, resulting in the brooch having the appearance of a penannular brooch.
The brooch is circular, and semi-circular in cross-section. The frame measures c. 5.5mm in width and c. 3mm in thickness. The reverse is flat and undecorated, and the front is decorated with a series of incised transverse grooves. These grooves are arranged in four group…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete flint blade of probable earlier Mesolithic date (6500BC - 4500BC). The flint blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and triangular (crested) in cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the upper of the ventral (lower) face. The lower (pointed) end shows evidence of retouch using a direct percussion from a hammerstone. One of the long edges also shows evidence of retouch, although this maybe an artificial artefact caused by movement in the ploughsoil. The flint is a mid creamy grey colour. This flint is likely to have come from a riverine or…

Cast copper alloy disc brooch of Roman date (80-250 AD). The brooch is broadly circular in plan. The front face is slightly relatively flat with a raised cast design and central cast hole (diameter: 1.9mm). Little remains of the upper surface due to corrosion and abrasion. The deign seems be centred on concentric raised circular panels, the outer possibly being a wreath. Presumably through the central hole a projecting rosette or similar applied ornament was fitted. There is no evidence of a gilt or silvered applied surface. The circumferential edge of the brooch has a raised ridge ar…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two fragments of secondary debitage both show small areas of retouch, being made into small side scrapers. The flakes show both controlled and uncontrolled knapping / fracturing, some of which is modern. The debitage is from the second phase of tool making, having less than 20% cortex on the outer surfaces. The reworking / retouch is limited to small areas and is applied with pressure or direct percussion. The flaking is small and neat creating serrated edges ideal for cutting and scraping. The style of reworking suggests a date in the Neolithic (3500 - 2100 BC).
They have a joint b…

Cast copper alloy fragment of a strap fitting of probable later medieval or post-medieval date (1350-1700). The strap fitting is lozenge (diamond shaped) in plan. The upper face is domed (convex) in profile and D shaped in cross-section; the edges are bevelled. There is no evidence of cast or incised decoration on either the front or reverse of the fitting; however, this may be due to heavy corrosion. The reverse face of the fitting is concave with a single cast sub-rectangular projection (hook) which is folded back onto the reverse surface. The hook would have passed through the stra…

Object type: RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring was originally circular in plan but is now distorted to an irregular oval; it is lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. The ring is a light - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a Medieval or later date. The function of the ring is varied (sacking ring, curtain ring etc) and although it is worn a direct use cannot be attributed.
The ring measures 26.7mm length, 25.2mm…
