Roman copper alloy trumpet variant brooch fragment dating to the 2nd century AD. The brooch has a flat broadly oval in plan head with a broken top edge which may have been the remains of a headloop. The back of the head has a concave hollow with ridged sides and a gap in the middle of each side ridge for the sprung pin mechanism. The mechanism and pin is missing. At the top of the head on the front is a moulded line with a groove either side following the contour of the top edge. The bow extends at a c. 90 degree angle down and away from the head at a reduced width. It is broken ac…

Incomplete cast copper alloy small long brooch of early Early Medieval date (Anglo-Saxon). Only part of the head and a segment of the bow survive. The head is flat and plain in decoration and due to peripheral damage it is not possible to say whether the head would have been of trefoil (cruciform) or square-headed design when originally cast, although the present shape suggests trefoil as the more likely of the two. There are the remains of an integrally cast semi-circular lug on the reverse of the head for taking the, now missing, pin. The bow is arched and narrows towards the, n…

Incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch of Early Medieval date (Anglo-Saxon or Anglian in culture). The main frame of the brooch is complete, although the area (perhaps a constriction) where the pin would have rotated and the pin are missing, resulting in the brooch having the appearance of a penannular brooch. The brooch is circular, and semi-circular in cross-section. The frame measures c. 5.5mm in width and c. 3mm in thickness. The reverse is flat and undecorated, and the front is decorated with a series of incised transverse grooves. These grooves are arranged in four group…

An incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch of medieval date. The brooch is sub-circular in plan having been misshapen, probably as a result of its deposition, and roughly half of the brooch is lost due to old and worn breaks. The frame is circular in cross-section with two oval expansions present. Both expansions are decorated with a cross-hatched design. The metal is a mid brownish-green colour and is worn. The remains of the brooch are 24.1mm long, 5.6mm wide, 5.5mm thick and weigh 3g. Similar examples can be seen in Egan and Pritchard, p.253, fig.163, no.1330 & 1333.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date. The head, bow and acanthus moulding survive, but the foot, catchplate, pin mechanism and pin no longer remain. From the reverse of the head the lug which would have held the pin mechanism can be seen. The head itself is a worn trumpet shape and is undecorated. From the head the upper bow extends terminating at a worn single collar. Below the collar is a crude and worn acanthus decoration followed by a second single collar. The worn remains of the lower bow begin to extend down from the lower collar though it is now lost due…

An incomplete copper alloy hinged two-piece Colchester derivative (Dolphin) brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are complete and cylindrical. A longitudinal hole is present to take the axis bar. It is filled with orange iron corrosion (rust), presumably from an iron axis bar. At the centre of the wings, on the reverse face is a vertical slit. The pin is lost. The bow head of the brooch is relatively hump-like, and slightly angular. The bow is an angular D shape in cross section. The bow tapers along its length to an abraded rounded point / foot. The catch plate on the reverse f…

Cast copper alloy disc brooch of Roman date (80-250 AD). The brooch is broadly circular in plan. The front face is slightly relatively flat with a raised cast design and central cast hole (diameter: 1.9mm). Little remains of the upper surface due to corrosion and abrasion. The deign seems be centred on concentric raised circular panels, the outer possibly being a wreath. Presumably through the central hole a projecting rosette or similar applied ornament was fitted. There is no evidence of a gilt or silvered applied surface. The circumferential edge of the brooch has a raised ridge ar…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st to 2nd century AD date The brooch is near-complete, missing the spring and the chain-loop (with a length of 45.1mm, a depth of 18.9mm and a weight of 5.1g). The missing spring would have coiled around a single pierced lug on the rear of the head. Remnants of iron corrosion indicate that the axis bar was iron and suggest the spring may also have been iron. The head is near-circular (9.1mm wide) with the remnants of a broken chain-loop at the apex. The upper bow is of D-shaped section (6.6mm wide and 4.6mm thick at the head) …

Roman copper alloy plate brooch of Umbonate type and of 2nd century AD date The brooch is damaged and torn but is near-complete, missing some of the periphery and the pin (with a surviving length of 41.1mm, a depth of 10.2mm and a weight of 7.7g). The missing pin was hinged between twin lugs, positioned beneath the damaged chain-loop. The remnants of the pin and axis bar suggest they were made of iron. The central area on the rear of the brooch is dished and the eroded catch-plate survives as a stub on the rear rounded basal lug. The periphery of the brooch appears to have been enh…
