Object type: MILLSTONE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A limestone millstone, incomplete and probably dating to the Roman period. The millstone has a raised, almost domed, central perforation and a worked upper suface; the surface is still quite rough suggesting that the stone experienced minimal usage (if any) as continuous grinding would result in areas of the stone being smooth. The underside of the stone is very rough and has had minimal working. A large part of one side of the millstone is missing making it unusable; this broken edge may have occured during or soon after manufacture and this may explain why there is no evidence of pr…

Object type: VERVEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
A silver Post-medieval hawking ring or vervel, that would have been attached to a hawk's jesses. The vervel is circular in plan with a D-shaped cross section having a flat outer surface and slightly convex inner surface. The inscription '+ OF EDMVNTON' is hand engraved around the outer circumference of the vervel. It is possible that the hawk had a second vervel on which was engraved the name of the owner. The style of the lettering suggests a 16th (Tudor period) or early 17th century AD date.

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy horse harness pendant probably dating from the 14th century AD. The pendant is shield shaped with a suspension loop perpendicular to the main body. Some gilding and blue enamel survives on the shield. The shield bears an arms, the closest comparison of which belonged to the Holmes de Chester family. There is a device in the upper left of the shield that is hard to identify, but if this is the arms of the Holmes's then the shield would be described as Barry of five Or and Azure on a canton Ermine a rose Gules; the device being a rose. One Robert Holmes was an influe…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy finger ring of the 'belted buckle' type. The ring is designed to imitate a belt and buckle, with an open end designed to slide through the 'buckle' loop and therefore also allowing the ring size to be widened. The strap of the belt (or hoop of the ring) has an inscription ' MATER....' (Mother...) but most of it is too worn to read. It may be a religious inscription relating to the Virgin Mary. The buckle is of a type common during the medieval period, and can be described as an oval shaped buckle with two side knops near the strap junction; this type of buckle dates fro…
