Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy sub-rectangular shoe or knee buckle with pointed triangular ends and a drilled frame for a separate spindle which is missing along with its cast copper alloy stud chape and pointed triangular pin which would have been attached to it. The ends of the steel spindle are still intact within the buckle frame and there is a small amount of iron corrosion product on either side of the frame. The patina of the entire frame is good which helps to define the moulded decoration of alternating incised and raised transverse lines that continue in a rectangle around the…

Cast copper alloy sub-rectangular shoe buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle which has a cast copper alloy stud chape attached to it and a pointed triangular pin. The steel spindle is still intact with iron corrosion product at either end and covering the spindle end of the chape and pin. Otherwise the patina of the frame is good and there appears to be no incised or moulded decoration on the frame. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar buckle on page 103, No.663, which is dated from c.1690-1720.

Cast copper alloy double-loop spectacle buckle, sub-oval in plan, with rounded ends and five concave roundels on each loop and a narrowed, recesssed strap bar. The pin is now missing and the back of the buckle has been worn smooth. The recessed roundels were unlikely to have been used as settings for stones, but were purely decorative as similar buckles with openwork were at the time. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar buckle on page 71, No.446, which is dated from c.1600-1720.

Incomplete cast copper alloy single-loop spur buckle, sub-triangular in plan, with an integral plate terminating in a hook, now broken, which was used to attach the strap to the spur. The pin is made of a flattened rod of copper alloy and is looped through a circular hole in the plate, and there is a slight knop projecting from the plate on either side of the pin bar. The plate has two extant rivets, one just beyond the pin hole and one just inside the hooled terminal, where the plate widens to a sub-square shape in plan. Whitehead (1996) illustrates similar spur buckles on pages 32…

A fragment of a Medieval ceramic vessel (c. 1200-c. 1400). The fragment is rim sherd with an everted rim. It is generously tempered with small pieces of chalk or shell and occasional pieces of angular flint. The outer and inner surfaces is coloured yellowish red (Munsell Color 5YR 5/6) and the core is dark grey. When complete, the outer diameter of the rim would have been c. 280mm. The sherd is worn and the breaks abraded due to it being in the inter-tidal zone where it was found on the surface in sand and silt.

A scraper small enough to be called micro if Mesolithic. The fairly circular flake has a diagonal strip of pebble cortex with nearly parallel flake scars on either side as though this is the last core detacment before it is ready for working all the way around a platform. On the left margin there is a straight line of tiny semi-abrupt retouch, met by another straight edge of similar edgework continuing on the ventral side. The opposite margin is notched with semi-abrupt retouch on the ventral surface. The subjective 'soapy feel' of the flint is augmented by the pinkish tinge of the c…

A side scraper on a large, thick grey and cream primary flake from a pebble, mellowed by incipient patination. The flake has begun to patinate without any visible signs of use. It may have been struck in Later Mesolithic or Early Neolithic times, guessing from the surface condition of other local flint finds. The retouch through the patina is haphazard and looks like damage, but is all invasive or semi-invasive on the left dorsal margin and concentrated again on that margin on the ventral side. Here there are patches of similar diffuse gloss running from these scars so it appears that…

A scraper or cutting tool utlising both divergent lateral margins of a thick flake of mottled cream and light grey flint. The distal margin and dorsal facet is of pebble cortex. It is met by parallel flake scars with wavy ridges and small flake platform preparation at the proximal end. The left dorsal margin shows only 2 small invasive scars but on the ventral side there is extensive invasive scarring as though the edge has been sharpened. The opposite margin is almost entirely semi-abruptly retouched with small, neat flakework as though blunted to grip the knife or as a separate scr…

A scraper of abrupt edgework on the distal facet of a thick, short flake of mottled grey-brown and cream flint. The left margin and most of the dorsal surface is pebble cortex and the right margin has been overlapped by a similar thick flake removal. This margin is also finely serrated with tiny retouch. The ventral surface is diffusely glossed from the cortical edge inwards over about half of the surface. Without any further clue from the natural edge then this may be an accidental or even natural occurence but it does not rule out a repetitive human activety like burnishing or other …

The foot from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel of later Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It has worn surfaces that are pitted and show signs of corrosion in places, and missing most of the leg due to old breaks. The foot itself is pentagonal in plan, L-shaped in profile, with a flat back face and flat underside. The front face is faceted, producing an almost zoomorphic appearance. All surfaces have traces of a green/brown patina and sooting that is partially visible on all suraces suggests exposure to high temperatures. A triangular section flake of grey-brown flint with pointed ends and indistinct or converging ripples. There is incipient patination which on this site suggests older Mesolithic material but is not conclusive as individual pieces may vary. This shape of flint is found on old flint land-surfaces as a natural 'starch fracture'. Butler(2005),colour plate 7 illustrates one, but this example has slight crush damage at the proximal end as well as distal and nearby margin wear from use as a piercer or cutting tool. Experimentally it has been found that spindle shaped flints like this can for…
