Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The piece is flat and sub-oval in plan with an oval shape missing one end where there is a straight edge which may be complete or an old break. The front is decorated by a central dot with a large incised circle around it. Between this circle and the edge are three circular perforations for attachment. They are arranged in a triangle and the arrangement suggests the straight edge was not attached to an object in the same way as the opposite end. It may suggest the straight edge is original or possibly had a projection from it. Although plai…

Two sherds of Roman greyware, a base sherd and a rim sherd. Both sherds have a medium grey-brown fabric with abundant, c. 30% fine sand temper. The base fragment has only a small part of the base on it but shows the convex wall rises from the flat base at about sixty degrees. The rim fragment has an everted rim, possibly from a jar, with a slightly widened and flattened top ending in a slightly rounded outer edge. It is too short and irregular to estimate the original diameter (L.: 57.1mm). They weigh 28.08 grams together.

A rim sherd probably from a medieval cooking pot (c.1100 - c. 1400 AD). It has a pale grey-brown silty fabric with c. 15 - c. 20% medium quartz temper; the inclusions have leached out slightly on the surfaces. The piece has a rolled over rim projecting at ninety degrees on the outer face (Th.: 12.45mm); below the edge it has a slightly concave inner side and convex outer. It is too small and irregular to identify the original diameter.

A cast copper-alloy fragment of uncertain date and function. The small piece has a circular cross-section and appears complete at one end. The complete terminal is fairly flat with bevelled edges. Beyond, the object narrows to a waist before expanding to similar dimensions to the terminal. The waisted central section is slightly faceted (Dia.: 6.65mm). Beyond the expansion the object narrows to a shaft with a sub-rectangular cross-section (6.7 by 4.9mm). The old break has occurred just as the 'shaft' begins. The object has a mid-green patina with traces of what seems to be a white met…

A copper-alloy weight in the form of a fourteen-sided polyhedron, effectively a cube with the corners cut off. Eight of the sides are equilateral triangles, the other six are rectangular. Each of the rectangular sides is decorated with four punched annulets. The border of each rectangle is delineated by a line of smaller incised dots. There is a single annulet on each triangular face. The weight is Early Medieval in date, and can be closely paralleled by the polyhedral Viking weights in the Ainsbrook hoard from North Yorkshire (Treasure Report 2004: no. 137). One of those weights had …

An incomplete and very worn Post Medieval silver coin. The only detail that remains on the coin is on the reverse where a long cross fourchee over flat top shield can be seen. It is most likely that the coin was minted in the reign of one of the Tudor monarchs and therefore dates broadly from the later part of the 16th century.

A copper alloy fragment of an unidentified object of probable Early Medieval date, possibly a plate from a strap end. The fragment is a plate of copper alloy which is roughly L shaped in plan, but was probably originally rectangular with a rectangular slot in the centre. The foot of the L is 10.88mm long and 5.88mm tall. The sides of the foot appear to be complete but the base has a chamfered edge which looks as if it may have been cut. The top is rough and broken at the right hand side where the now missing side of the object would have extended. At the left side of the foot of the L…

A lead alloy musket shot / ball of post medieval 1600-1800 date. The shot is sub-spherical in shape with a relatively even surface. It relatively round but has been fired having a clear flattened impact surface which suggests it has hit something relatively hard. The casting seam and spur from the mould are not present, probably having been trimmed. The ball has been shaved to remove casting waste; this has left small irregular platforms / facets across the ball. The colour of ball is a light grey white colour with a relatively thick surface patina. Similar shot have been dated to the…

A cast lead alloy weight of probable Roman or Medieval date 100 -1650 AD. The weight is an irregular conical shape with the base being an irregular circular shape and the apex an irregular dome. The weight is undecorated, although it has a series of possible marks on the outer surface these are distorted by laminating corrosion patina. The weight is pierced at the apex by an irregular slanting hole which has possibly cast rather than drilled: the hole has a diameter of 4.9mm. Without other artefacts from the same context it is difficult to date the artefact; due to the variation in fi…
