A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of late medieval date, now missing its pin. The frame is broadly circular with a central pin bar; the pin is now missing. The reverse is flat, while the front is decorated with moulded raised and sunken panels that alternate around the inner and outer edge of the frame. This creates an effect described by Margeson (1993, 28; no. 159), discussing a parallel, as 'castellated'. Diameter: 46.76mm; Thickness: 3.1mm; Weight: 17.06g Another example can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 46; no. 269) which he dates to the 15th century…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and heavily corroded object, probably of Medieval or Post Medieval date. The fragment is undiagnostic but in plan consists of a sub-square 'pin-cushion' shaped central hub with a flat back and convex front surface. There are four equally spaced spokes projecting from each corner of its outer edge, each with a rectangular cross-section. All of the four spokes are broken and are of slightly different lengths. The front face of the hub is decorated with fine surface hatching, the fineness and regularity of which suggests that a Post Medieval date is more probable. There is …

An incomplete late Medieval to early Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop annular buckle, c. 1450-1550 AD. The remains of the buckle consist of the buckle frame with a narrowed central strap bar. Remains of the iron pin have formed into a concentrated gobule around the strap bar. A similar example illustrated in Whitehead (2003, No. 274) suggests that this buckle frame was decorated simply in the form of a five petalled flower, with lateral incised lines defining the separate petals. The frame perimeter is slightly irregular, with extended edges further indicating the separate …

A late Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle frame with moulded decoration, c. 1450-1650 AD. The buckle frame consists of lipped loops flanked on each side by two groups of moulded oblique ridges and a narrowed strap bar. The pin is missing, although traces of iron corrosion on strap bar and to one side of the buckle frame suggest that it would have been composed of iron. The buckle measures 26.2 mm long, 22.8 mm wide and 3.2 mm thick; it weighs 5 grams. Whitehead (2003) illustrates similar examples (cf. pp 60-61), which suggest that this frame dates ei…

A late Medieval to early Post Medieval cast copper alloy thimble with sloping sides and slightly domed top. A continuous spiral of hand-drilled circular pits emanate from a bare tonsure at the centre of the top; the pits cover the entire external surface save for a narrow plain band at the base. The pits get slightly smaller towards the top. The thimble has been cast from one piece and does not have a thicker or turned over rim at its base. The lower half of the thimble has been flattened, resulting in a split on each side. It measures 19.5 mm high, 24.7 mm wide, 0.8 mm thick and weig…
