Object type: MICROBURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This microburin contains the bulb of percussion from a piece on which a microlith would have been removed. This microburin would have been snapped off the end, resulting in the break seen here. A similar object is illustrated by Pierpoint (1981) Fig 6.24

Flint scraper, roughly triangular in plan and plano convex in profile. The left and right margins have been retouched. There is a pronounced medial ridge on the dorsal side. The ventral side has possible chip damage on the distal end and right margin and there is also gloss. The flint appears to have been heated. It is a dark grey brown with dark beige mottling. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 166, Fig. 70, No. 7 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

A small piece of mottled light grey translucent to off white flint, oval in plan. The dorsal face is smooth from the proximal to medial, the proximal edge appears to broken in what could have been originally a tang. The distal exhibits retouch along its full curve. The retouch marks are long and could be classed as invasive, the angle being relatively shallow, but not consistant with that of a knife edge. The proximal edges juts out from the piece and may have been orinally made to attach to a haft.

Small discoidal flint scraper, light blue/grey in colour, appears to exhibit signs of being subjected to heat with the colouring. The dorsal face, proximal edge is flat, as if having been snapped off. All the remaining edges have been reotuched, the left margin possibly invasive. There appears to be a circular depression in the dorsal face, medial to proximal region (although not shown on the drawing). The ventral face is smooth with the bulb of percussion appearing to be present. The right side has a jagged groove in the surface of the ventral face, possible post use damage. Ther…

Mottled grey piece of flint, rectangular in plan. The dorsal face , proximal edge has a concave notch removed from the side,, going from the left margin to just past the medial and touching on the right side. The left margin, distal edge of the medial is rough and appears flawed or the flint material has deteriorated ! The right margin appears to exhibit signs of abrupt retouch along its full length, the distal edge has been retouched in places, but still rough in appearance. The ventral face is smooth with some indents around the margins, but no retouch is visible, the bulb of pe…

Discoidal piece of light grey flint with 30% cortex covering the dorsal face, similar material to local beach pebbles. The cortex is rough and forms a ridge from the proximal to just below the distal edge of the dorsal face. There is a concave slope running from the ridge to the right margin, which exhibits some retouch. The face displays some conchoidal ripples. The left margin remains sharp on the edge, with no indication of retouch, the distal edge has an indetn but signs of retouch. The ventral face is smooth, with a prominent bulb of percussion, conchoidal ripples are prese…

End scraper. Plano convex in profile. The ventral face has not been retouched. The bulb of percussion and the prepared platform are still present. The dorsal face has been abruptly retouched at the distal end creating a concaved edge which contains use wear. Apart from at the very distal end the lateral edges have not been retouched. It has been made from pebble flint. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 127, Fig 51, No 2 which dates to the Early Neolithic.

There is use wear on the right lateral edge at the distal end and on the left lateral edge. There is a small notch on the distal end. The dorsal face contains semi abrupt retouch which runs around the right, distal and left edges and terminates at the proximal end. End scraper. Made from pebble flint, there is no prepared platform. The dorsal faces is almost completely covered in cortex except for some abrupt retouch at the distal end. The flint has a reddish tinge to it which suggests burning or heat treatment. It is sub circular in plan and has a plano convex profile. The ventral face has not been retouched. A core rejuvenatiion flake of brown and grey flint with cream inclusions. The flake has been struck from the platform to remove a hinge fracture and carries several other flake and blade scars with platform preparation abrasion visible on the proximal end.The flake has been utilised with the ventral side showing gloss where the right margin has formed a natural denticle as the flake removal has accomodated the thicker flint behind the hinge fracture. The opposite ventral margin carries a short line of invasive flake scars and may have been used for cutting. Butler(2005) illustrates a…

Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A blade of black nodular flint with the proximal end snapped off, possibly by damage. On the left margin, beginning through the snap is blunting retouch through the cortex. This continues towards the distal end from both sides, but is shallower leaving cortex in place. On the right margin the free blade edge is made into a notch near the proximal end with a short line of fine semi-abrupt retouch. Although backed blades are a Meolithic and earlier technology this is not a true blade and the nodular flint in this location is more likely to be imported in the Neolithic.

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of late medieval date, now missing its pin. The frame is broadly circular with a central pin bar; the pin is now missing. The reverse is flat, while the front is decorated with moulded raised and sunken panels that alternate around the inner and outer edge of the frame. This creates an effect described by Margeson (1993, 28; no. 159), discussing a parallel, as 'castellated'. Diameter: 46.76mm; Thickness: 3.1mm; Weight: 17.06g Another example can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 46; no. 269) which he dates to the 15th century…
