Flint graver, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, and triangular in section. Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast strip of copper alloy, D shaped in section, bent over at one end and curved at the other as if to make a hook that has broken off. The curved face of the strip has an evenly executed, moulded spiral pattern running along it but stopping just before each end of the object where it also tapers slightly. The strip doed not appear to be a bracelet that hes been straightened by plough damage, it is robustly made and looks as if it was cast straight. Two Roman coins found in the same field on the same day are recorded on the database: BUC-3BD2C0 & BUC-3B9E57. These suggest that it m…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint single-platform micro-core, sub-rectangular in plan, and triangular in profile and section. The core has had flakes taken off from all edges of the sub-rectangular platform. There is a small patch of cortex of the original beach pebble on the flatter face of the core. The flint is a light grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 120, Fig.5.104, No.71, which is dated from the later Mesolithic.

Flint end scraper, re-used from a single-platform core, sub-rectangular in plan, and plano-convex in profile and section. The scraper has been unifacially retouched at the distal end of the dorsal face, but the side margins and proximal end of fractured naturally to form a jagged edge. The retouched scraper edge was formerly the edge of the platform for the core, and several flakes were removed before the implement was re-used. The ventral face preserves the cortex of the original beach pebble. The flint is a light grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond (…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
About 80% of a leaf shaped arrowhead, missing the point to an old break, dating to the Early Neolithic period. Both faces are covered by invasive, shallow, parallel retouch done by pressure flaking. There are patches of cortex on both sides near the butt and a further patch in the upper corner on one side, in all about 15% of the surface. The break at the point is a hinge fracture suggesting an accidental break. The flint is mid grey flint with paler areas and mottling. It is 19.9mm long, 18.6mm wide and 3.2mm thick; it weighs 1.27 grams.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy 'dolphin' brooch of the early Roman period. The wings are semi-cylindrical with transverse moulded ribbing and house a very corroded copper-alloy spring consisting of 13 turns. A rearward-facing hook retains the chord. The brooch has been broken in antiquity about three-quarters way up the bow. The lower bow, foot and pin are missing. The brooch is in poor condition with heavy corrosion and pitting.

Incomplete knapped flint arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC - c.1150 BC). The arrowhead is formed from a large tertiary flake; the bulb of percusison has been removed by retouch although the percussion waves are clearly visible. It is symetrical and sub-triangular in plan with a broken point and a slightly concave but very thick base with what appear to be accidental breaks or possibly the unretouched side of the flake running across the base. The dorsal face has been completely retouched with shallow invasive retouch in the centre and more ab…

A Roman contemporary silver plated forgery (fourrée) of a denarius of Tiberius (AD 14-37) (Reece Period 1). On the obverse, the silver plating is missing from most of the bust. The legend, in retrograde, is still legible: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS. The reverse is missing most of the silver plating. The underlying copper-alloy core is severely corroded making identification to one of the two possible reverse types (Quadriga, or Livia as Pax) impossible. It is most likely that is the PONTIF MAXIM Pax type of Lugdunum (Lyon) (RIC I, p. 95, cf. no. 30), of which official and contempo…
