Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face is relatively flat and has a single irregular pierced hole through the centre. The corroded remnants of an iron wire are present; this wire would have aided the use and also secured it for safekeeping / storage. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. The weight has been marked by movement in the ploughsoil. This weight is most likely to date from the later…

An incomplete Late Iron Age to Early Roman cast copper-alloy vessel foot possibly from a bucket (c. AD 25-c. AD 150). The object is roughly semi-circular in plan and the outer arc has a diameter of about 40.0mm. At the side of this arc it is bevelled from tip to tip. Both bevels have numerous file marks. On the opposite side to this arc there are two evenly-spaced semicircular indentations. These also have numerous file marks. In between these indentations there is an oblique ragged break. In side view it tapers from the break towards the arc. At the break the width is 9.6mm and the w…

A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy seal matrix (c. 1200-c. 1400). The handle is hexagonal in cross-section and narrows to a lozenge-shaped terminal pierced with a circular hole for suspension. The circular die is 17.7mm in diameter. The die device contained within a beaded border is probably a bird with its wings raised, as if landing. The surronded legend is corroded and unclear but probably reads: *A_I_EE SVV (SVV is "I am" in French). The first word may be "aimer", "to love". The object has traces of a mid-green patina which is partially coated with a thin buff deposit. The di…

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring was originally circular in plan but is now distorted to an irregular oval; it is lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A slight thickening of the ring is present on one edge - this maybe remains of a casting jet. The ring is a light - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a Medieval or later date. The function…

Both examples have a burnished surface although one has suffered significant abrasion / lamination. Both seem to be plain and undecorated, the damaged example may have had spots of glaze applied on one surface and there is a slight indication of the use of an annulet punch to decorate the outer edge. Direct parallels have not been found but these form of counter / gaming piece, are relatively…

Small fragment of a heavily abraded cast copper alloy trumpet brooch of early Roman date (75-175 AD). The fragment is very small and undiagnostic; the fragment consists of a sub-oval shaped head in plan (D shaped in cross section) which is snapped at the junction with the bow of the brooch. The bow would have been D shaped in cross section. The underside of the head is flat and abraded - there is no evidence of a central bar. The exterior surface is heavily abraded and is a mid green colour with an abraded purple surface present in places. There is no evidence of cast decoration prese…

A cast lead alloy seal, probably a bag seal, of unknown date - possibly later post medieval (1600-1800 AD). The seal is an irregular square shape in plan and rectangular in cross section. From one edge, either the top or side depending on orientation a small sub-rectangular tag extends and is bent into an irregular U shape. This tag presumably acted as a method of attachment to a wire or cord. The front face has a cast design upon it, however this is heavily worn and detail is indistinct. A rubbing has been taken of the surface and from this the design could speculatively be described…
