Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy terminal, probably zoomorphic, plausibly from a medieval strap-end. The fragment is circular in cross-section at the break; it thickens slightly to an oval section terminal. This latter might be interpreted as the gaping jaws of a beast. Between the terminal and the break the object incurves slightly at top and bottom. On the upper surfaces and the sides it is decorated with a series of four transverse ridges. On one side there are diagonal incisions that may delineate the jaws, but they are unclear on the other. For zoomorphic terminals to medieval strap-ends see …

Object type: CANDLE HOLDER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A badly corroded copper alloy tapered socket or finial, with a curved closed terminal. It is possibly part of a candle holder or rushlight holder dating from the Medieval period. It could also be interpreted as a finial. The surface is pitted and part of the wall of the hollow socket is missing. It is not clear whether the object is complete or not. It seems possible that the closed terminal which bends in a right angle may have continued as a bar. At 12mm diameter, the socket is rather small for candle holders such as those shown in Medieval Households, but is larger than the rushlig…

A modern forgery of a silver hammered saxon penny. The coin is a copy of Edward the Elder Tower type (North reference 666 - AD899-924). This coin is a particularly rare one in its genuine form, but one which is copied on a relatively frequent basis. Andrew Woods and colleagues at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge have kindly looked at the coin and have provided much information regarding its provenance and authenticity. Reasons for its identification as a forgery are: the way the letters are cut, the E on the obverse in particular are not quite authentic in style. The beading …

Probably a fragment of a medieval candlestick; the collar in which the candle stood is the only surviving part. It is a thick and chunky ring of copper alloy which tapers. At the narrower end (15.3 x 13.5mm opening) there are broken rectangular projections to both sides. The narrower end of the collar is sub octagonal in plan, and the upper wider end is sub circular. Compare figure 426 in Medieval Households which is topped by a tapering collar of the same size and shape as this example, also with a projection to each side. It dates from 1350 - 1400. This example was found on…

A very worn and damaged probable Post Medieval pipe tamper dating from 1650 - 1750. It is in the form of a loop with a collared stem projecting. The disc at the end of the stem used to tamp the tobacco is missing, and is just a worn break. The top of the loop is also missing, and the ends taper to points. They are not even and seem to be a result of damage rather than intentional. There may have been a seal matrix or decorative bezel in this area, but it is now missing. There are slight traces of gilding on the loop. Alternatively, this could be some other Post Medieval object like a …
