Half of a cast lead alloy papal bulla probably of Nicholas III (1277 - 1280), IV (1288 - 1292) or V (1447 - 1455). Half of the normal design of Sts Paul and Peter are visible on the obverse, and the legend in three lines is on the reverse: "N[ICO] / (L)[AVS] / P[P...]". Part of the slot through the centre or the bulla, through which the cord attaching it to the document would have passed, is visible. Nick Griffiths comments "There is some evidence that bullae were kept as souvenirs once the document had been removed, perhaps to use the Papal name as a good luck charm, a bit like pilgr…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy buckle dating from the Roman period, abdout AD 200 - 410. The frame is D shaped but is unusual in being thicker than it is wide, as if the outer edge is made of a strip of metal in its side. The bar is a separate piece which has been riveted through the sides of the frame. The pin is cut from sheet and is wrapped round the bar. The plate is rectangular and is folded round the bar with a slot for the pin. A single copper alloy rivet at the attachment end holes the sheets together. There is no decoration. This unusual construction gives the buckle a homemade appearance. T…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A lead alloy token probably dating from the Medieval period. One one face is the design of a crude bust facing right. On the other is a cross pattee with a pellet at he centre, and a pellet in each angle. This design is probably inspired by the coinage of the time and can suggest a medieval date. Very few tokens showing a bust in profil have been recorded on the database. Compare DENO-9EE0A6 and ESS-B268F6 which have both been attributed a Post Medieval date.

A lead pencil. It is a solid cylinder which tapers to a blunt point at one end and is broken at the other. There are slight bends to the shaft. It has a creamy yellow patina. In theory this type of pencil should have gone out of use with the discovery of graphite in the 16th century, but many examples look much later.

The ends are short straight bars with a narrow raised collar and then an oval knop terminal. One terminal is missing. It is oval in cross-section with a dark green patina. Purse hangers were freely swinging, held at each end, usually by a bar mount, to a girdle. When they were not used to attach purses to belts such objects were often used to attach knives. A close parallel can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 223;…
