Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Late Saxon incomplete probable pendant. The top flattens out to the break, beyond which there may have been a suspension loop. A Late Saxon trapezoidal stirrup-strap mount measuring 42mm x 32-7mm. There are two iron-filled fixing holes in the upper corners, two more in the angled flange, and traces of an iron strap on the reverse of the latter. The cast openwork ornament is imperfect, two of four small circular apertures in the centre being blocked and all four larger surrounding apertures being misshapen. The engraved decoration consists of a corner-to-corner saltire in a frame of lines along the sides and base. There is no suggestion of any zoomorphic element in the decoration. It may be ascribed to William…
