Copper alloy 'Venus penny' stock jetton of the Low Countries, c.1490s-1550s, Mitchiner 844. The 'Venus pennies' were a popular series of jettons, or reckoning counters, that were made for the merchants of Antwerp during a period when this city was the flourishing principal commerical centre of the land, and were circulated amongst the merchant classes during the first half of the sixteenth century. A cast copper-alloy pot leg from a cooking vessel of the Medieval to post-Medieval periods. The leg is trapezoidal in section, with a central rib and wider front. The break has occured in antiquity. The back has two heel-like protrusions to create a wider base, which is flat but has some holes from mis-casting. The object has a green patina and patches of black sooting. Dimensions are: Height 32 mm. Width 41 mm. Thickness 22.5 mm.Weight 105 grams.
