Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A lead alloy weight, probably a trade weight. The weight is square and has a male bearded forward facing bust within a circle on the obverse. The reverse is plain. An inscription runs around the side of the bust although this is unclear. It appears to be retrograde and may read JAMES... raising the possibility that this is a mould rather than a weight, although this is currently uncertain. The weight measures 22.82 mm long and 22.23 mm wide. It is 3.65 mm thick and weighs 15 grams.

A small medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla. The ampulla is vessel shaped and hollow. It is damaged at the top, and presumably would once have been closed. If the ampulla ever had handles they no longer survive. It is plain and undecorated so tracing it to a particular shrine is difficult. It measures 23.28 mm long, 17.76 mm wide, 5.72 mm thick and weighs 9.6 grams. It has a pale cream to white patina.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy probable fragment from a cast post-medieval belt fitting, possibly from a 16th to 17th century sword belt or baldrick. The remains of the fitting are lozenge shaped, gradually decreasing in width in three deliberate 'steps' which lead to a knopped terminal. The broken end would probably have had a loop or hook to facilitate attachment. The front is decorated with a moulded geometric design consisting of an elaborate cross/quatrefoil intertwined with a square, and in the parts of the arms of the cross that sit outside the square there is a single pellet. The reverse is u…

Object type: CUTLERY
Broad period: MODERN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The terminal from a modern, 18th to 19th century pastry jigger. The object is missing its functional cutting end, and only the top end survives. The object is 'T' shaped and terminates in a 'crimped' zig zag, presumably to be used in decorating the pastry. Beneath the terminal there is a double collared knop and then a circular shaft. These objects are often confused with Roman tile combs. The object measures 50.21 mm long, 35.25 mm wide at the 'T'shaped end, and has a shaft that is 4.9 mm thick. It weighs 14.6 grams. It has a smooth dark green patina.

Object type: DISH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Saxon (early-medieval) dish rim sherd with small holes from leached chalk inclusions, with a few inclusions still in situ. In Winchester this fabric was used in the late Saxon period but the fabric is used elsewhere, for example Hamwic, from an earlier date (Helen Rees pers. comm. October 2009), so an earlier date cannot be ruled out. The sherd is a crude quadrilateral form with dark brown/orange surfaces. The rim is very subtle, with the side travelling down below, before angling inwards sharply at c. 45 degrees.

A copper-alloy dagger chape constructed from a sheet of folded metal. The chape is hollow to allow the tip of the blade to slide in. It is undecorated although it has been silvered. It is bent out of shape although the aperture probably was oval when in its original condition. It measures 31.21 mm long, 11.62 mm wide, 8.02 mm thick and weighs 2.7 grams. It is likely to be medieval to post-medieval in date.
