Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast tin alloy or zinc alloy (tombac) composite two-piece discoidal button, plano-convex in profile, with a central raised pellet on the front and two small circular holes on the back which would have held the attachment loop, now missing. This loop or shank would have been made out of copper alloy wire which would have been embedded into the back of the button. Bailey (2004) illustrates a similar example of a tombac 'pimple' button on page 33, Fig.8.13, which is dated to the 17th century. Read (2005) illustrates a similar example of a discoidal button with a cen…

Copper alloy coin weight for an Angel of Charles I (1625-49), which should weigh 4.6 g, with a crowned 'X' above an 'S' on the obverse and what might be an angel on the reverse, but the surface of the weight is all but gone, so it is hard to be sure. There does not appear to be a reverse legend, suggesting it is not a weight for a half guinea of Charles II, which has an identical obverse. Withers (1995) illustrate a similar example of a coin weight for an Angel of Charles I on page 14, letter j.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy single-loop oval buckle frame with an ornate outer edge consisting of five raised sections divided by four transverse raised borders and terminating in two lobed knops. The central section has been worn where there was originally a notch for the pin to rest in. Most of the frame is missing, and the strap bar, which would have probably been narrowed and offset, and may have held a metal plate as well as the pin, now missing. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 22, No.97, which is dated from c.1250-1400.

Cast copper alloy double-loop oval spectacle buckle with and angled frame and a central narrowed pin bar which is flush with the frame, missing its pin. There is a transverse line on the outer edge of one loop of the frame, where the pin would have rested, but the rest of the frame is too corroded to make out any further decoration. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 55, No.316, which is dated from c.1500-1650. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 110, No.669, which is dated from c.1485-1600.

Tinned cast copper alloy trapezoidal shoe or knee buckle with rounded expanded ends and a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The outer edge of each loop has a flattened knop with moulded oblique grooves and there are five moulded transverse ridges around each of the spindle holes. Each of the spindle holes retains a short length of the steel spindle but the majority has corroded away, and there is some iron corrosion product on the back of the frame at one end. The spindle would have held a cast copper alloy chape and pin which are also now missing. The tinned surface has flaked aw…

Cast copper alloy rim fragment, semi-circular in plan and rectangular in section, from a vessel that was circular in plan with an unfinished and damaged surface and an incised line on the inside of the rim, following the curve of the inner edge. On the exterior surface of the fragment, there appear to be turning marks, and also the remains of exterior and interior sooting. The inner edge of the vessel is uneven so it is difficult to ascertain the original diameter of the vessel, but it might be between 170mm and 200mm. Incomplete cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount or escutcheon in the form of a bull or ox head with elongated flared snout and short horns, incised with a cross on the top of the head between the horns. The cross and the incised lines behind the horns may represent a halter of some sort if it is the head of an ox. In one angle of the cross there is a central circular depression, between the horns, but this does not appear to be a rivet hole. The horns are oval in section and point forward as they slightly curve inwards. Behind the horns there are two parallel transverse lines that defin…

It is engraved with a standing figure facing left (on the intaglio), leaning on a column. This is probably a representation of Apollo, as on a nicolo glass intaglio from Braconbury, Felixstowe, Suffolk (M. Henig A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites (3rd edition, Oxford, 2007), 95 and PL. 1, no. 25). The lower part of the setting is cracked. A Post Medieval or Modern silver spoon fragment which is broken, bent and melted. Only part of the bowl and a short length of stem survive. The bowl seems to have been fig-shaped but is badly damaged by fire. The bowl tapers into the stem which is rectangular in section with raised edges. Inside the border is a row of beading on each side. The stem is bent and ends in a melted and distorted break. Thought the shape of the bowl is similar to 16th century spoons such as BH-E031A2 (2007 T286) and SOM-CFC5F7 (2009 T340), the shape of the stem and the decoration is not consistent with spoo…
