Cast copper alloy Zulu assegai (stabbing spear) blade of the Umkhonto (long-bladed spear) type, with a tapering tang bound secured with a woven wire collar into a short wooden haft. The wire collar was originally found with the blade, but is now missing. The tang shape is quite distinctive, square in section tapering to a point, 12 mm wide and 133 mm long. The Royal Armouries in Leeds have several similar examples, Nos xxvil.265-7 (without hafts or collars) and xxvil. 211 (with hafts) (Thom Richardson pers comm).

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic buckle.
The buckle is D-shaped with a broad outer frame and narrowed bar. The outer frame has a pin rest in the middle of the outer frame, with shallow cast grooves across the breadth of the frame, which become increasingly angles and more closely spaced as the frame joins the bar. The terminals of the frame bear worn, facing beasts' heads, from which the bar emerged. The frame is bevelled but flattens towards the strap bar, with the lower edge projecting more than the upper edge. The pin is missing.
