Incomplete cast copper alloy handle from a vessel made up of a rectangular section with four parallel ribs, tapering to a slightly narrower, recessed, plain rectangular band. Both ends have been sheared off from what they were attached to, and the plain end has a broken edge which is leading off into another section at a 45 degree angle. This final section may have been riveted to a vessel and was still connected to it when the handle was torn away. Butler & Green (2003) illustrate an escutcheon with a loop for a handle that is riveted on to a skillet which has been convert…

Cast copper alloy square coin weight with a possible crown on one face and part of a bust facing right on the other. The weight now weighs only 0.81g, which is 12.35 grains, so it must have been used for a lower denomination, like a half crown (1.2g), considering that some of it is missing. Withers (1995) illustrates a coin weight for the halfcrown of James I on page 15, IIs IXD (a), with crowned Roman numerals on one face and the bust of James I facing right on the opposite face, which dates from c.1604 -1619. But without any numerical values or clear images, it…

Cast copper alloy scissor handle consisting of one finger loop and part of the arm still attached. The loop is oval in plan and lozenge-shaped in section, and the arm is rectangular in plan and square in section. The arm is incised with oblique lines, creating a star formation, and then notches are filed down to create a square section at a 45 degree angle from the original square section of the arm. Other examples of scissor handles with similar decoration can be seen on the database, IOW-AB29C5, CAM-7F2D96, and NMS-52C987, which are dated to c.1350-1450, and an example wi…

A sherd from the base of a large greyware pot of Roman date. The outer surfaces are a light grey in colour; the broken surfaces showing the inner matrix are a darker mid-grey. The matrix is fine grained and contains numerous small, light coloured inclusions, mainly quartz, and fewer slightly larger black inclusions. The fabric is hard and the texture is irregular. There is a groove across the upper surface which is probably post depositional damage. The concentric lines on the base indicate that the pot was cut from the wheel with a wire. The fragment is 108.4mm long, 68mm wide and 21…

A circular, cast lead alloy seal matrix, dating from 1200-1300AD. It is 25.8mm in diameter and 5.8mm thick. It weighs 10.95gm. The central device is of a four-petalled flower with a narrower line in each of the angles formed by the petals, all enclosed in a circle. The inscription appears to read "+S;[--](O)ERA(NT)R(EOIN)" but damage to the edge of the matrix makes some letters difficult to read and makes the legend unintelligible. It is a personal seal but the name of the individual cannot be deduced. The reverse of the seal has a strengthening rib that extends from the centre to the…

A cast, lead alloy powder measure cap dating from 1600-1700 AD. It is 29.3mm long, 17.1mm thick and 19.7mm high. It weighs 19.09gm. It would have been a circular cup, but has been slightly squashed and is now oval. There are the remains of a small loop on each side. These would have had the strings of the powder measure threaded through them to, allowing the cap to be removed while still keeping it attached to prevent loss. The cap has a patchy white patina.
