Silver and copper alloy Button. Biconical, probably hollow, button, the front being markedly taller, with stub of a wire attachment loop on its back. The loop was broken during initial examination, revealing a purple tint indicating its material to be silver; the button front might also be silver or base silver. However, greenish corrosion is also present, so it must remain uncertain as to whether the object is a composite of copper alloy and silver, or whether this arises from brazing. The wire loop tends to suggest a later date than the small size and simple biconical form…

Fragment of an undiagnostic gold fragment. As this was a potential treasure item, it was submitted to B.M. Ager (Curator Prehistory & Europe) for inspection and it was described thus: 'The find consists of a short, curved length of gold rod that is cut and broken at both ends and has been faceted by hammering; length, 24 mm; weight, 3.32 grams. At one end, one of the facets has been punched with a group of six dots. But the fragment is undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act.' Following his recommendation this …

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of uncertain date and function. In cross section it has a flattened upper and lower face, curved inner side and an outer side than comes to a central point. There is wear on one side of the ring where it becomes thinner and narrower. One the outer edge there are parrallel stirations probably created by filing. Such plain rings are hard to date and may have had a range of uses including suspension rings on straps. 25.6mm in external diameter, 18.5mm internal diameter, max 3.1mm wide, min 2.4mm, 1.9mm thick, 2.03 grams in weight.

Lead, with iron loop Possible Steelyard Weight fragment. A now-irregular flat-topped cast weight, with an apical iron pin perhaps representing the stub of a suspension loop. Though now heavily damaged, it is possible the original form of the weight was pyramidal with fluted edges or arises. In this it resembles a 'squashed wheel' design of a little over half the same weight, which is described amongst others thought to have been used for checking payments in silver. The weight of this example is close to half a mark, though this relationship may be misleading because of both d…

Iron Age Irstead quarter stater (plated)   Description: the coin has a base metal core with gold surfaces. It weighs 0.65 grammes, and has axes of 10.6 and 9.9 millimetres. A description of the obverse and reverse is difficult because much of the gold surface of the coin is no longer present. But it is clear the obverse has a rectangular form divided into squares flanked on one side by a pellet-in-ring. On the reverse there is a horse to right with a pellet-in-ring beneath, and a lentoid form above the back of the animal.   Discussion: The coin is an ancient forgery of a very rare …

A cast copper-alloy buckle frame with integral plate of Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. The buckle frame is oval shaped in form with slightly expanded outer edge and straightened bar. It is separated from the plate by a transverse groove that has a small circular perforation serving as pin slot at its centre. The surviving pin is rectangular in form and section, tapering slightly towards the tip, which is incomplete due to old breaks. The integrally cast plate is triangular in form, tapering towards the attachment end. It has moulded semi-circular projections to either side close to …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete coiled copper alloy snake-form ring. The ring is formed from a single piece of wire coiled four times. The outer face of the ring has a textured surface, presumably intended to look like 'snake-skin'. One end of the wire culminates in a snakes head, the other curls around the outside and then inside of the ring, before tapering to form a 'tail'. The precise function of the object is uncertain, as the 'tail', which curls inside the ring, would make it uncomfortable to wear as a finger ring. The ring is most likely to be of Roman date, when snake form jewellry was popular. …
