Lead hemispherical weight. Cast plano-convex weight with longitudinal perforation, tapering from 7mm diameter on the flat base to 3.5mm diameter at the apex. This may have been intended for attachment of a suspension loop. Of two hemispherical weights from Early Medieval Flixborough, one is unperforated but the other is of similar diameter to this example and is equipped with an iron loop; it comes from a context of supposedly Viking-Age date though with residual material present - careful review (by Ian Riddler) has cast doubt on the likelihood of an Anglo-Scandinavian phase at Flixbo…

Copper alloy Harness pendant. A lobed, probably quatrefoil, cast sheet harness pendant with the stub of an elongated suspension loop at right angles to the pendant itself. A vertical linear arrangement of tiny circular marks on one side, in three or more rays, may represent a relict of a punched decorative scheme. The light construction and lobed form are both characteristic of later medieval pendants. The object is now crumpled. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1450. Iron Fragment of a small rowel spur, with short neck of length 21mm descending on a (now) curved alignment, and apparently retaining stub of a rowel with a single slender point, though these latter details may be concealed or distorted by corrosion products. Usseleby, April 2010 29: Fired clay Sherd from strap handled vessel. Fine sandy clay buff fabric with oxidised external surface and apparently reduced core, forming a slightly wedge-shaped object with a broader slightly concave end, and a narrower flattened end. Vertical striations appear on one broader face. The finder identifies this object as an abraded handle sherd. Sandra Firth kindly examined this piece, identifying it as from a Medieval pot. Pottery Bodysherd of shell-tempered fabric, possibly from a hand-made vessel. The inner surface is black; the outer surface is oxidised to a pale orange-buff colour. The diameter of the vessel, at least where this sherd comes from, would be about 140mm. Despite the coarse fabric, there is no sign of external sooting, and therefore no evidence that this was from a vessel used as a cooking pot. Sandra Firth kindly examined this sherd, suggesting a possible Roman date. Suggested date: Later Iron Age to Early Roman, -300 to 200. Length: 43.19mm, Thickness: 8.7mm, Weight: 18.04gms.

Silver and copper alloy Button. Biconical, probably hollow, button, the front being markedly taller, with stub of a wire attachment loop on its back. The loop was broken during initial examination, revealing a purple tint indicating its material to be silver; the button front might also be silver or base silver. However, greenish corrosion is also present, so it must remain uncertain as to whether the object is a composite of copper alloy and silver, or whether this arises from brazing. The wire loop tends to suggest a later date than the small size and simple biconical form…
