Object type: PIPE TAMPER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy pipe tamper. The upper terminal of the pipe tamper is circular in plan and flat in profile. Integral to the lower edge of the circular disc is a moulded, circular sectioned stem. The diameter of the terminal which tamps the tobacco is 7.12mm. The condition of the metalwork is poor with traces of a mid green/grey patina. The pipe tamper measures 59.19mm long and 16.92mm wide, weighing 9.4g. The pipe tamper dates to the early Post Medieval period. The small diameter of the stem terminal which is used to tamp the tobacco in the pipe suggests a 17th century date.

Complete copper-alloy medieval annular brooch. Circular frame, c. 27mm in diameter, with a chunky cross-section. It is decorated with multiple transverse or slightly oblique grooves on the front, but undecorated on the reverse. There is a constriction c. 4mm wide at one point on the frame, which retains a well-made copper-alloy pin. The shaft of the pin is D-shaped in cross-section and tapers smoothly to a point. There is a pair of small projections at the junction of the shaft and loop; the loop itself is flattened and bent around the constriction to form an open loop. Well made, in…

A cast copper-alloy three-part folding strap clasp of Medieval date (c. 1250-c. 1450). The frame is rectangular and has an incomplete rotating ('folding') end wrapped around one edge. The rotating end is recessed for the frame and has a very small circular rivet hole on the centre-line, close to the break; this rivet would have secured a bar mount. It has a mid-brown patina but some areas are corroded. 15.1 x 12.4 x 4.6mm. Weight: 1.98g. Similar folding strap clasps are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard 1991: 118-119 and Whitehead 1996: 40-41.

Waste greyish-brown secondary flake with a pronounced dorsal ridge and which retains some cortex to the distal end. The ventral face shows a small bulb scar at the distal end whilst ripples emanate from the striking platform at the proximal end suggesting that the core from which it was taken was struck from either end during preparation. A number of other flake removals are evident on both faces. There appears to be some possible fine retouch along the edges.

A Mesolithic flint flake. The flake appears to be broken, and based on the patina this break is ancient. The flake is partially cortical on its right edge. It appears not to have had any significant retouch, although there is a small area of what may be retouch on the right edge near the butt. It is trapezoidal in section and measures 17.75 mm long, 15.91 mm wide, 2.53 mm thick and weighs 0.7 grams. The flint is a pale grey colour.

The front face of the blade (dorsal face) has several clear facets and ridges. There is an area of relative recent damage on one edgewhich has distorted several small areas of retouch present on the long edges. The flint is a mid mottled white colour with a num…

Large sub-rectangular piece of flint. There seems to be very little evidence of flaking or retouch present on either of the faces. Any facets present seem to be as a result of plough roll or frost action. This flint is recorded due to the exceptional size of the piece and the presence of other worked flints in the area. It is possible that this piece represents a reserve of tool making material in an area where flint of this size is rare. Measures: 58.6mm length, 53.3mm width, is 17.0mm thick and weighs 70.63 grams.
