Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead token of Medieval to post-Medieval date.
The token is bent and corroded. One side bears the relief-moulded image of a stylised swan or duck, standing right, with a pecking chicken above, smaller, as if in the distance. The opposite side appears to be plain. The token measures 25.5mm in diameter, 2.2mm thick and weighs 5.99g.
Lead tokens with depictions of birds are relatively common finds (cf. BH-D3A325 and BH-79AD33). Unfortunately, a lack of examples from excavated contexts means that they cannot be accurately dated at present.
