Object type: HOOK
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

A copper alloy S shaped suspension hook. One loop of the S is smaller than the other. The object is poorly cast as the two halves of the mould were not quite lined up. This has produced a step along the centre of the hook where the top half overhangs on one side, and the bottom half juts out on the other. If it had been properly made, the hook would have been circular in section, and it tapers to a blunt point at each end. The object has a light green patina. It is hard to think of other uses for the object except as a suspension hook, but it is interesting that there is no visible we…

A probably lead weight probably dating from the Medieval/post Medieval period. It is circular with a domed top. There is a small depression in the centre of the base, and some scratches on the base. It has a diameter of 34.80mm, thickness 9.24mm, weight 73.54g, which is 2.6oz. This does not seem to fit into a standard system of weighing, but it may still be a locally produced weight for a specific purpose. Helen Geake notes that: “Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied …

Two small sherds of pottery. Both are wall sherds but are from different vessels. The first has an orange coloured outer surface and grey core. It contains much mica and also dark grey inclusions in the hard matrix. It may be coal measures orange fabric, common in the Doncaster area. If so, a medieval date is likely. It has a length of 25.12mm, width 16.72mm, thickness 6.25mm, weight 2.41g. The second sherd is grey throughout and is pimply. The fabric is hard and contains mica and quartz. It has a length of 22.67mm, width 19.98mm, thickness 4.26mm, weight 1.88g. It is too small to be …
