Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy open-topped thimble or sewing ring of probable later Medieval to Post-Medieval date with open top end. It has a thickened rim with grooved border. Spiralling upwards from the rim are rows of evenly spaced punched circular indentations that terminate with a recessed band at the top of the thimble. It measures 13.24mm in height, 20.30mm in external diameter at the base, 18.37mm in external diameter at top, 0.84mm in thickness, and weighs 3.70g. The use of a thimble with an open top suggests a date range in the 15th to 16th centuries AD (see Holmes, 1988).
