Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead weight or spindle whorl of Roman or later date. The weight is oval shaped in plan, conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and central circular perforation. To one side it has been mis-cast resulting in a prominent globular projection. It measures 23.66mm in length, 16.42mm in width, 15.89mm in height, and 25.25g in weight. This weight could potentially date as early as the Roman period, although a Medieval or Post-Medieval date is perhaps most likely.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy (possibly brass) “bee-hive” or “heavy duty” thimble of later medieval date (1400-1550). The thimble is complete but distorted in plan and profile by movement in the plough soil. A large tear on one side has removed some of the metal from the side and dome. Originally it is likely that the thimble was broadly D shaped in plan with gentle sloping sides and a shallow domed top. The top / dome is formed from relatively thick cast metal. Originally the base would have been either circular or slightly oval – it is now irregular in shape. There are no notches or f…
