Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy (possibly brass) “bee-hive” or “heavy duty” thimble of later medieval date (1400-1550). The thimble is complete but distorted in plan and profile by movement in the plough soil. A large tear on one side has removed some of the metal from the side and dome. Originally it is likely that the thimble was broadly D shaped in plan with gentle sloping sides and a shallow domed top. Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but abraded and corroded cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount of later early medieval date (1000 - 1100 AD). The stirrup strap mount is irregular in shape; being pentagonal in plan with a slight convex (domed) front and a concave rear face. The edges of the mount are slightly bevelled. In profile the mount is sub-rectangular (D Shaped) and curved due to design and movement in the ploughsoil. In cross section the mount is arched (C shaped). At the apex of the mount is positioned a central broken cast hole which shows evidence of wear. It has a diameter of 4.0mm. On the rev…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy strap suspension fitting of probable Roman (50-450 AD) or possible Early Medieval (1000 – 1200 AD) date. The fitting consists of a single plate; which is sub-rectangular in plan and slightly curved in profile. The upper part is pierced in two places and would have enabled the plate to be fixed to a leather strap or similar. The remains of two corroded iron rivets are present. The lower part of the plate is pierced with two circular holes (diameter 6.7mm); both of these are worn, one is broken, through use. The upper part of the fitting is decorated with …
