An unidentified lead alloy artefact of probable medieval or post medieval date. This artefact is either the remnants of a composite pommel from a sword / dagger or a variant style of weight. From the shape and weight of the iron bar (which is similar to those seen on whittle tanged knives) and the uniform nature of the lead alloy element I would prefer the former. The artefact is composite consisting of a lead alloy flattened sphere through which passes an iron square sectioned bar. The lead alloy element is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The upper and lower…

Broad period: ROMAN

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 2.b2, flat wing ends type) of Roman date (50-60 AD). Distributed in the Lower Severn Valley. The wings are almost complete being semi-cylindrical in plan with closed pierced end caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. A small sheet of copper alloy projects from a central depression on the rear of the head of the brooch, it is possible that this aided the security of the pin / spring but is highly unusual. It is possible that the internal chord of the spring would have fitted…

An incomplete and misshapen cast copper alloy Jews harp of probable post-Medieval date (c. 1500-c. 1800). The lyre-shaped instrument is fragmentary and only one side element / arm survives. Originally it would have been symmetrical in plan; with a sub-circular head and tapering arms which are characteristically lozenge-shaped in cross-section. The fragment measures 58.2mm length, 9.9mm width, is 6.6mm thick and weighs 6.68 grams Taken from a record on Jew Harps by Frank Basford Geoff Egan of The Museum of London has commented on Medieval jews harps: The jews harp, or trump, is an…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is broken and one loop is lost. What remains is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. The pin / attached strap fitting was probably made of iron judging from the concreted iron corrosion on the reverse face. There is a slight recessed pin rest on the frame, although this coincides with abrasion and d…

Cast copper alloy mount / stud of probable later medieval / post medieval date (1400-1650). The head of the mount is broadly hexagonal in plan and D shaped in cross-section. The design on the upper face is much abraded but seems to be based upon a ‘Tudor’ rose. The upper face is domed (convex) in profile and the edges are slightly bevelled. The rear of the mount is plain and un-decorated. A moulded cast spike, which is sub-rectangular in plan and in cross section extends from the reverse. It measures 2.9mm in length, 4.2 x 3.5mm in width / thickness. This spike terminates in a b…

Two conjoining fragments of cast leaded copper alloy turned vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date (1400 - 1650). The fragments are much worn and irregular in shape. The conjoined edges are also abraded and the broken edge is likely to be due to the rim being flattened in antiquity presumably prior to deposition. The two fragments are likely to be from a large dish, bowl, or cooking vessel with a stepped and in-turned rim. The vessel fragments are a mid green colour with a polished patina. Due to the flattening of the rim it is impossible to suggest a projected diamete…

Sherd from the wall of a relatively thin walled Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a drinking vessel of post medieval date (1600 – 1720). This sherd is relatively fresh with broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple orange and the inner and outer are a mottled purple grey. The inner and outer surfaces are also burnished. The outer edge has a series of parallel l…

Glazed sherd from the rim of an extremely hard earthenware jar, jug or storage vessel of probable later medieval date (1350-1550). The sherd consists of both the rim and part of the broken sidewall. The rim is near vertical and the sidewall expands slightly before tapering. It is relatively large with unabraded edges. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is almost plastic in structure (being very like stoneware); it is mica rich, having frequent grit-like inclusions. The fabric is a matt grey colour. The exterior surface is glazed and it is a mottled brown green colour. The sherd…

Nine fragments of sheet copper alloy vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date (1350 - 1650). The fragments are much worn and irregular in shape; three are joined by metal rivets and another two show evidence of copper alloy rivets and associated holes. At least one fragment is from the rim of a vessel and it is likely that the fragments represent several different vessels. The three joined sheets are riveted together by rivets formed from rolled copper alloy sheet which has been fixed by hammering the ends. The body of the vessel seems to have been constructed first whil…

Cast copper alloy mount / stud of probable medieval date (1400-1650). The head of the mount is broadly square in plan and D shaped in cross-section. Cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1620-1680). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly rectangular in plan with a central bar. From the short edge of the frame two triangular shaped wedges extend. The pin is lost but probably formed from a single sub-rectangular tapering length of copper alloy which is attached to the central bar by the end being folded to form an irregular ‘wrap around’ loop.
