Object type: CHATELAINE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Early Medieval cast copper-alloy chatelaine of probable 7th-century date. The chatelaine has a biconical neck at the top, imitating a spacer bead, decorated with incised transverse lines (lengh 11.0mm, maximum diameter 7.8mm). The neck appears to have an iron core or iron pin protruding from it judging by the terminal which is covered by iron corrosion. A triangular open work plate with rounded corners is cast integrally with the neck. It is 21.6mm long, 14.3mm wide and 2.3mm thick. The plate is mostly flat curving outwards on both sides at the top point to reach the same thickness a…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy open bell with a large flat circular suspension loop attached to the rounded top of the hemispherical bell. The lower edges of the hemisphere are irregular suggesting old breaks and the sides probably projected down into a cone. Iron corrosion on the inner side may be the remains of the clapper. It is 17.9mm tall, 8.5mm excluding the loop, 14.4mm in diameter and weighs 5.30 grams. It is more solidly made than the usual Early Medieval 'norse bells' and may be Roman in date. Crummy (1983:127, no.4165) illustrates a similar but slightly larger bell but with a comparativ…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy stud attached to a subrectangular piece of copper alloy sheet with remains of fabric trapped between them. The stud has a flat circular head and the stub of a single circular sectioned spike on the back. The sheet is 22.9mm long, 14.8mm wide and 0.6mm thick excluding the rivet, 3.8mm including. It weighs 1.82 grams. The fabric trapped between the pieces suggests this could be a decorative stud on fabric with an unusually large rove to keep it attached, or a stud holding the copper alloy sheet piece to fabric or perhaps a stub holding the fabric to another item. The…

A damaged cast copper alloy spherical rumbler bell (crotal) of Post Medieval date (1600-1800 AD). The bell is spherical and comprises two hemispherical domes with a raised circumferential join. The upper hemisphere is plain with two circular sound holes with a open slit between them where the metal has not filled the mould during casting. There is a sub-square suspension loop projecting from the top. The curve of the bell continues under the loop aperture suggesting it was made using a detachable ‘sprue-piece’, this method was introduced in the 17th century. The lower hemisphere ha…

Half of a cast copper alloy token or coin. The item is a disk with a prominent raised design of a bust on one side. The break is old and patinated. The remaining half appears to have a blank reverse and there is no inscription on the obverse. While the style of the bust, from what can be seen, appears classical without the upper half of the head it is hard to be sure and classical style busts were also popular in the 17th to 19th centurys. It does not apppear to be a coin and may have been a token of some type. Lead tokens with imperial busts of probable Roman date are also known e.g. …
