County: West Sussex

Cast copper alloy open bell with a large flat circular suspension loop attached to the rounded top of the hemispherical bell. The lower edges of the hemisphere are irregular suggesting old breaks and the sides probably projected down into a cone. Iron corrosion on the inner side may be the remains of the clapper. It is 17.9mm tall, 8.5mm excluding the loop, 14.4mm in diameter and weighs 5.30 grams. It is more solidly made than the usual Early Medieval 'norse bells' and may be Roman in date. Crummy (1983:127, no.4165) illustrates a similar but slightly larger bell but with a comparativ…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Colchester type one-piece brooch dating to the first century AD. The brooch is bent and missing its spring and pin - it has a damaged openwork catchplate and a forward facing hook. The brooch is oval in section, thicker at the wings and narrowing towards the foot. The bow is bent but would have measured c.61mm in length. The wings on this example are short (12.43mm) and there are possibly three vertical ribs for decoration visible on one side.

The upper part of the bow and head of a Roman bow brooch, probably of developed T-shaped type. The wings are complete although the pin is missing. The wings are tubular, completely enclosing a hinged pin. The wings are wide, spanning 35.21 mm. The upper part of the bow is very angular in style, projecting horizontally back from the wings and then jutting downwards quite abruptly. On the head, just behind and between the wings, a vertical projection rises and is clearly broken. Based on other examples of developed T-shaped brooches, it seems likely that this projection would once have b…
