Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of Medieval date.
The mount consists of a domed oval plate which extends into a thinner arm. The upper surface of the oval plate is decorated with a series of narrow ridges which radiate outwards from the centre. The plate's underside is concave. The arm is of pointed oval section and at its distal end is an upward-projecting integral rivet. The convex underside of the arm and unusual position of the rivet suggest that this mount may have been designed to be suspended rather than to sit flush to a surface. The corroded artefact measures 32.7mm long, 13mm wide an…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy single-loop buckle.
The piece represents part of a frame and integral forked spacer. The frame appears to have been oval in plan. The adjacent forked spacer has a rectangular tab either side of the central axis bar. At the frame end of the spacer is a vertical ridge. The more complete side of the spacer steps into a remnant of a projecting prong. The piece measures 16.6mm long, 23.1mm wide and 4.3mm thick. The weight is 4.09g.
Examples of buckles with integral forked spacers were found at Meols, Cheshire and are common finds throughout England. The st…

A lead mend for a pottery vessel.
The mend takes the form of a crudely made rivet with a sub-circular, domed head, short shank and sub-circular 'stop'. The surviving pottery fragment is pink in colour, has frequent sand inclusions and an orange and mottled green glazed outer surface. The majority of the vessel is flat, but there is an angular extension on one side, perhaps suggesting that the original pot was a tray-like vessel. The fabric itself bears many characteristics of Late Medieval Hertfordshire glazed ware (c. 1350-1450). The piece measures 31.5mm in diameter, 15.8mm thick…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy casket key of Medieval date.
The bow is sub-oval in plan and has flat surfaces. It tapers into the stem, which is of flattened-oval section and is hollow at the bit end. The bit is simple in form, having a single ward at the bottom corner, projecting horizontally. The artefact measures 32.8mm long, 12.6mm wide, 3.8mm thick and weighs 3.27g. It has heavily corroded surfaces.
Several examples of casket keys were found in excavations in Winchester (see Biddle 1990: 1024-1036), in layers dating from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy artefact of probable Roman date. No parallel could be found for this piece. Stylistically, it has much in common with Roman nail cleaners and tweezers (see Crummy 1983: 58-62); however, the form (see below) suggests it is a strap fitting and possibly served a purely decorative function.
The artefact has been made from a strip of metal which has been folded widthways, forming two sides of equal length separated by a gap of a few millimetres. The upper side has a perforated, slightly recessed sub-circular loop at the top; this tapers into a collar decorated with two tra…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy strap-end of early-medieval date. This artefact is a good example of a Thomas Class A, Type 1 strap-end with Trewhiddle style decoration (see Thomas 2003: 2-3). It survives in very good condition, with little wear or corrosion. The upper portion of the strap-end is vertically split, creating two attachment plates joined by two in-situ domed-head rivets. The upper side of the top plate has a central 'V-shaped' depression. The vertical sides are slightly bowed and taper towards the bottom of the artefact. Extending down each vertical edge is a beaded line border. The uppe…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy sub-discoidal weight. The weight has tapering sides with a narrower base than top. The sides and base are plain but the top has a central circular indent surrounded by an irregular circle of 7 ring-and-dot punch marks. It is 10.9 mm in diameter, 4.9 mm thick and weighs 2.91 grams. A simple weight like this is hard to date with complete certainly but the style with the circular indent and ring-and-dot motif appears similar to many Medieval to post-Medieval cup weights.
It has been suggested that cup weights date from 12th-14th century and continue in use into the…
