A Roman pottery rim sherd from a vessel probably a jar of probably Mica-dusted ware dating from the 1st – late 2nd century AD. The sherd shows an upright neck and rim with a red fabric with a thin grey strip in the inner margin. The external and internal surfaces are red with a scattering of mica across the surfaces. Meriel Jeater suggested this vessel might be Mica-dusted ware. This is a fine ware and in the City of London they are one of the most common types of ware from the Trajanic (late 1st – early 2nd century) period (Davies, Richardson & Tomber 1994:136). D…

Late early Medieval - Medieval cast copper alloy openwork plate probably from a composite buckle plate. The plate is in the form of a lion passant guardant, moulded in deep relief within a rectangular frame. One end of the frame is missing from old breaks, at the other there are circular rivet holes in each corner. At one point where the lions raised right foreleg overlaps the frame it has been shaped around the leg. The spaces between the lion and the frame are openwork, one hole, at the top of the lions rear right leg, appears clumsy in the design and could possibly have been anothe…

A cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of the later 6th-7th century. Only the headplate remains, and this in two pieces. The head is rectangular with a central panel and a chip-carved border and knobs. The central panel and border a flush rather than stepped, with the central panel defined by a simple incised line along the top and to either side, with a broader groove along its bottom, which would have separated the panel from the now missing bow. A quatrefoil has been punched into the centre of the panel, consisting of four pointed-oval petals arranged symmetrically. The border …

Copper alloy domed Post-Medieval thimble. The indentations appear to be hand-made as they are deeper at one side than the other. They are arranged in a spiral suggesting that the object is of 16th century date, when this became the most popular arrangement (Holmes 1999, Datasheet 9, p.2). Imported thimbles, with machine-made indentations, became popular in the following century, after the technique was introduced in 1620 (ibid. p.3), suggesting that this thimble was unlikely to have been produced long after this date. It has quite thin walls and was clearly produced using the stamping …
