An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type),Mackreth 2011, 4.h. Plate 47, no. 6248. The wings are missing, and this is not recent damage. The axis bar, spring and pin are also all missing. In the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is a fragment of an integral hook which would have supported the spring chord. A probable fragment from the rim of a cast copper-alloy vessel. The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan, the outer edge, which is the original rim is convex in plan. The breaks of the fragment are not too recent. The rim appears to form a wide flanged rim of a dish or bowl. The underside of the exterior edge has a slight lip and is decorated with two bordering concentric grooves. This surface is covered with tinning or silvering. An incomplete buckle plate and a fragment of buckle. The plate is sub-rectangular in plan which is folded almost in half around the strap bar of a buckle. Only the strap bar remains of the buckle. In the fold of the buckle plate there have been two slots cut to allow for two pins. One pin is now missing, the other is incomplete. The pin is oval in section and tapers to a blunt broken point. A cast copper alloy ring type thimble. The lower rim is undecorated. Within the edges there are rows of rectangular shaped indentations. In plan the rims are circular, and in profile the thimble narrows slightly towards the upper rim. The exterior and interior surfaces have a mid green patina. It measures 13.05mm long, 17.25mm diameter wide at the base and the wall is 1.57mm thick. It weighs 3.6g. Holmes (Holmes, E.F. A thimble made from cast copper alloy. The thimble is made with a single shell. The exterior of the shell has a plain rim. Above the rim there are rows of conical cells which cover the thimble, including the top. The sides of the thimble are straight and tapers slightly towards the domed top. Post Medieval cast copper alloy hooked tag with a pierced flower shaped central plate, rectangular loop and long hook, the tip of which is mising to an old break. The hook and loop are opposite each other and are both D shaped in section. The central plate has a flat back and moulded convex front. It is in the shape od a six petalled flower with a central pellet and petals with a 'stem' expanding into trefoil ends. The strap bar is narrowed. There is copper alloy sheet pin wrapped 270 degrees around the strap bar, tapering gradually to the rounded end. The wings (length: 17.9mm; depth: 7.0mm) are slightly convex at the front and have a pair of transverse (vertical) grooves at each side. At the rear of the wings an integrally cast cylinder houses an incomplete axis bar in the form of a copper alloy strip, rectangular in cross-section.
