The hollow body is of U-shaped section, the depth and width of the groove increasing towards the thin, slightly convex cutting edge. The surface of the artefact bears a dark grey coating. Medieval silver groat of Edward III (1327-1377), Fourth coinage, Pre-Treaty Series D, minted at London, 1352-1353 AD, North 1152. The coin has the 'normal' R and closed C in civitas of Series D although the lettering in general has serifs and the N's are Roman and reverse barred which would fit better with an attribution to Series C.

County: Leicestershire

A copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. The brooch is incomplete, missing the foot. A difference in the colour of the patina at the break suggests that this break is relatively recent, probably a result of plough damage. The head is rectangular, measuring 24.16 mm wide and 15.7 mm long. The central raised rectangular panel on the headplate measures 14.3 mm wide and 17 mm long. The wings are flatter, and both wings and central panel are undecorated. There are three integrally cast knobs, one projecting from each edge of the headplate, all half-round and with a collar belo…

A copper-alloy zoomorphic padlock of Medieval date. The artefact takes the form of a stylised three-dimensional horse. The body, which would have held the barb-spring mechanism, is hollow and of sub-oval section. The irregularly-shaped keyhole is located at the front, while at the back are at least two damaged rectangular holes, into which the hasp would have fitted. On the back is a pair of transverse ridges which are designed to depict the saddle. Protruding from each of the four bottom corners is a short, angled leg. The neck angles upwards steeply. The head is set at a right-angle…

A copper-alloy cased mirror of Medieval date. The artefact consists of two shallow circular dished-shaped sides of equal proportions. The sides are joined by a hinge in which a perforated lug projecting from one side of the case sits between two similar lugs in the other side, and is held in place by a short axis bar. At the opposite end of the cases is a similar arrangement, although lacking any means of securing the two sides together. Protruding outwards from the edge of one side of the case, at 90 degrees to the alignment of the two aforementioned fixings, is a further perforated …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy plate, possibly from a buckle or strap end and probably of Medieval date. The plate is trapezoidal in shape, with a break at one end. One face is decorated with a slightly wavy groove around the outside edge. The remaining end is pierced with two holes, one of which is damaged and has become widened. It is possible to see the outline of a further two holes at the broken edge. As this plate was found together with an assemblage of largely Medieval metalwork, containing a high proportion of buckles, there is reason to suppose that it is probably a buckle plate of this date…

A Roman cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch, dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch is S-shaped, though one of the terminals is missing; the other appears to be in the form of a tri-lobed tail. There are four sub-triangular cells on this terminal which would have originally held enamel, though none now survives. The body, which swells in the centre, is also decorated with nine sub-triangular-shaped cells, none of which contain surviving enamel. The catchplate is also missing from the reverse, which is flat. The brooch has a very dark patina. There are faint traces…
