Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy harness fitting of Medieval date: probably a 'B-shaped mount' from a bridle bit. It consists of a flat, rectangular front plate that has a moulded front face and edges. The decorative motifs are partially obscured by the extensive wear the object has suffered whilst in the ground. However, they appear to form a central lozenge, with projecting scrollwork or lis along the exterior edges of the lozenge forming the lower corners of the rectangular plate and with moulded lines transecting each of the corners of the lozenge. Within the lozenge can perhaps be seen a cros…

An incomplete and rather unusual, short cast copper alloy pin. The pin consists of a rounded, bulbous head which narrows gradually into the square-sectioned shaft, which tapers to a break. We are unable to estimate its age or its intended use, other than to say it is probably post-medieval.

Copper alloy.
Possible tankard fitting; element from a composite object. Alternative identifications for this object as horse harness or war gear might be equally apt.
Cast concavo-convex fitting, expanded at the centre where a round hole occurs, and also expanded to form perforated attachment lugs at either end; all three holes have diameters of c.5mm. The three holes suggest this object united a converging group of similar elements, now lost. These were perhaps of a different material- what this was is uncertain. The holes do not appear wide enough to accommodate straps or cords, n…

A cast copper-alloy strap slide or belt loop of probable Post-Medieval date. It has a flat lozenge shaped front face with raised central transverse rib. Extending from either side of the front plate are flat rectangular arms that are folded to form a rectangular shaped loop, the ends of each arm overlapping on the back face. There is no trace of any additional decoration, however the metal utilised is an unusual alloy with a dark brown/purple colour and the surfaces have the remains of a very dark green patina. Possibly the general appearance of the object and its surfaces are the resu…

A cast copper alloy front plate from a buckle plate. The plate is rectangular in shape, with the bases of two hinges remaining on the left edge, these are both broken. They would once have looped around the strap bar of a D-shaped buckle. A rectangular border frames the plate. The face of the plate depicts a raised zoomorphic design (possibly of a dragon, or similar mythical creature) its body is facing left, but its head turns to look over its shoulders. The beast's head, neck and hind legs are thick, while its front legs are thin and it has a curving cat-like back. Two hole rivets p…
