A probable knapped flint blade of Neolithic date. The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rounded proximal end. The bulb of percussion is quite pronounced on the ventral face, with a bulbar scar above. The dorsal face features three main long removals. The distal end is quite abrupt and retains cortex. It appears that the fine retouch belongs to the sides, one of which is notably straight. The flake curves in profile. It is of a variable grey colour with some off-white patches.

Late medieval or early post-medieval badge or mount, now incomplete. Cast flat gilded silver object in the shape of a crown, probably a retainer's badge, livery badge or similar, perhaps forming part of the crest of a heraldic motif. The front has relief decoration, with five tines or spikes topped with round hemispherical terminals. There is a small cross or flourish and dot between each tine. The 'body' of the crown has a slightly curved decorative band of nine dots running horizontally across it, and below this is the curved inside back of the crown. The bottom edge of the object i…

Small flake with possibly usewear but little or no retouch. The flake has clear percussion waves on the ventral face although the bulb of percussion has been lost to a break and multiple arrises from previous removals from the same core on the dorsal face. It is triangular with an irregular break at the proximal end and left side (on ventral face) The distal and right edges appear complete however suggesting it was always broad relative to its length. There is possible usewear chipping along both these edges from casual use and a possible area of semi invasive, semi abupt scalar retouc…

Medieval (13th-14th century) silver finger-ring, measuring 20.01x20.58mm in diameter (internal 18.25x18.47mm) and weighing 2.99g. The finger-ring is composed of a strip of sheet silver bent into a hoop and joined on the inside with solder. This join has now come apart. The finger-ring is inscribed on the outside of the hoop between two grooves flanking the edges: backwards s st Wirgo Maria (St Virgin Mary). The broken join occurs between the backwards s and the s of st (presumably together an elaborate capital S).

A corroded and worn terminal fragment of a Roman copper-alloy patera (small saucepan) handle, in the shape of a ram's head. The ram has the corroded remains of curled horns on either side, and the terminal then narrows to a point to create the elongated face and nose of the ram. There is a worn depression on either side of the face to form the eyes. The terminal has fallen away from the rest of the handle behind the ram's horns; it seems the head was cast separately to the handle and soldered on (remains of a silver-coloured material can be seen on this surface). However there is a sm…

Cast copper alloy mount of probably late Medieval date. The mount is circular with a domed central boss and wide flat rim. There are projecting semi-circular lugs top and bottom with circular piercings; one still has the seperate copper alloy rivet in situ. The sides are both broken with old breaks but one has half a circular hole still in it suggesting there may have been lugs to left and right as well. The central boss is concave on the back. On the front there are incised lines which may form the outline of a ring of rectangles on the rim around the boss; there are also traces of gi…

A fragmentary rapier of Middle Bronze Age date. The object consists of the butt end and the blade which is broken. The slightly curved attachment end is slightly abraded and measures 24.3mm across. Below this it is notched (W.: 20.0mm). Below it expands, with stepped shoulders, to the widest point (W.: 31.55mm). Beyond the blade narrows gradually, still narrowing at the break, though increasingly less steeply. The edges of the blade are bevelled on both sides; the cross-section at the break has the appearance of an oval with winged protrusions. There is a slight curve upwards at…

Large shield shaped lead weight, late Medieval- Post-Medieval in date. It is most likely to be a trade weight. It has decoration in relief on the front and is flat on the reverse. The decoration consists of a raised shield shape leaving a lower border. In this there is a central fleur-de-lis with a design above which is slightly unclear but could be a cross with longer horizontal arms than vertical ones. It was too heavy for my scales whcih go up to 200g.

Cast copper alloy Late Iron Age/Roman tankard handle. Originally this would have been a pointed oval in plan but one end has broken off before the point. It is curved when viewed from the side as the ends would have touched the attachment plates and the handle curved outwards from this to form a space. It has been silvered/tinned on the outer face, most of which remains. It is also decorated with parallel grooved lines which follow the shape of the handle. The edges are slightly uneven and worn with green patches showing through. The reverse has no decoration but some wear and…
