Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast lead-alloy toy fire shovel. Four similar pieces, from London, are illustrated by Egan and Forsyth (2005: 186). They are of suggested 17th to early 18th century date. A portion of the handle survives, as does the top of the pan. The pan is flat and flares towards the point of the break. There is a rim around the perimeter and a cast design on the upper surface, probably a floral pattern similar to that on the aforementioned parallels. The handle is of semi-circular section. The artefact measures 18mm long, 17.1mm wide and 2.2mm thick. The weight is 1.93g.
