Silver gilt finger-ring of iconographic type. The bezel has a central ridge with two facets either side of it which contain a depiction of the Virgin Mary on the right and a saint on the left. Saints were portrayed upon jewellery not only as images of devotion but also as semi-magical protectors. It is hard to be sure which saint this is, as the gilding has worn away and the silver has corroded. The outside of the hoop is incised with oblique lines to give the impression that the hoop is twisted. The twists on the shoulders of the hoop, either side of the bezel, are engraved with thre…

11th-17th Century. Rusty iron oxshoe. The ox has a bifurcated or cloven hoof. An ox shoe is therefore constructed of two separate plates, so that one plate was needed for the outer and one for the inner 'claws' of each foot. They seldom survive to the same degree as horseshoes because they are made of relatively thinner material and this rusts through much more quickly. Although the outer edge has broken down, probably it had a slightly wavy rim, three nail holes and an intact curved upper extension at the toe for attachment. Complete half section but with surface rust. Length 97…

Possibly 11th Century or 14th-15th Century. Forged iron possible Norman shoe or Medieval Guildhall type horse shoe. Length 130mm, Width 115mm, Thickness 21mm, Weight 282g. Typical Guidhall horseshoe with narrow arched frog, eight nail holes, three with remnants of nails and one branch narrower than the other. The token is 17.5mm in diameter, 3.1mm thick and weighs 3.93g. Post Medieval cast lead circular double-sided token. The token is 21.6mm in diameter, 3.6mm thick and weighs 10.04g. The token is decorated with raised capital letters, EW with a large dot between, on one side. The other side has a raised date, 1768. Lead tokens can be produced easily and were often made at home for a range of tasks. They are therefore difficult to date precisely and dated examples are rare. The date of this re-inforces the impression that examples with initials are mostly Post Medieval in date.
