Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Ring made from plaited or interwoven silver wire. Each strand of the plait consists of seven parallel strands of silver wire, woven under and over each other to form a diagonal pattern. At the top and bottom these are then curved round and woven back up and down, so that the plait is made up of a single length of multi-strand wire. The ring is not perfectly cylindrical. It appears to be slightly squared, with a cross-section of around 15 mm square. Each end is slightly curved inwards and the total length is around 20 mm. Precise dimensions are not possible to take, as the strands have…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative (Dolphin style) brooch of Roman date (43-120AD). The wings are incomplete but originally were semi-cylindrical with pierced end caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. A sub-rectangular hollow is present on the reverse of the head of the brooch and does not extend into the wings; this is filled with a brown iron corrosion. The pin / spring would have been secured by an external chord which fitted to a transverse groove running along the rearward edge of the head. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile.…

A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. This is a large one-piece example with rearward facing hook at the top of the head. This hook would have retained the external chord of the spring; this has been lost along with the spring and integral pin. Below the hook is a mass of orange corrosion product, presumably all that remains of the (iron) axis bar. Above the spring are two flat wings; one is slightly truncated, while the other is bent. Incomplete Late Early-Medieval to Early Medieval (11th-12th century) copper alloy D-shaped buckle, with edge damage in places and missing its pin. It measures 27.68x25.04x10.23mm and weighs 11.34g.
The outside edge is rather tall, c.8mm high and c.5mm wide. It is decorated with a number of thick diagonal and squarish ribs (3-4mm wide and 3-6mm tall), giving a twisted rope pattern. A D-shaped notch cut at the centre in one side only (3.75x2.95mm) would have been a rest for the missing pin.
The axis bar is chunky and oval in section (3.97x3.17mm) with three moulded projecting knops…
