Copper-alloy French coin weight for an écu a la chaise of Philip VI (1328-50), the coin issued 1347-49. Diameter: 14.5mm, mass: 2.9mm. Paul Withers comments that: "The weight is most likely a near contemporary issue with the coin. An incomplete cast lead cloth seal, probably issued during the reign of Queen Anne. This disc was probably part of a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne surrounded by the inscription: FIDEI DEFEN (Defender of the Faith). The side with bust has a shiny buff patina and the rear side is plain and has a rough surface with a buff patina. Contemporary cloth sea…

A complete Venetian silver soldino of Doge Leonardo Loredan (AD 1501-1521). The silver soldino of Venice was known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change: soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.
