Record ID: YORYM-3283D7
Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant and hanger. The hanger and pendant are corroded together, perhaps by iron from the pin. The hanger is small, apparently with its attachment spike present on the reverse. The artefact is in poor condition, with the base of the pendant broken and the surface corroded; the surface has a light verigris colour. Much of the red enamel coating survives on the hanger; it forms the ground for a chevron, above which are two stars (mullets), and below which is a third. I. Szymanski has identified this as the arms of John le Sturmy, of Sutton Stur…

A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact, and the artefact is in fair condition. The surface is corroded with a dark green-brown colour. A significant amount of the original enamel and gilding survive. The ground consists of narrow horizontal stripes of alternating blue and gold (or possibly silver), which extended onto the loop; eight blue stripes are still visible. Superimposed on this are three red wreaths (chaplets). I. Szymanski has identified this as the arms of the Fitzwilliam family of Grimesthorpe in the mid 13th to mid-14th centuries.

A cast copper alloy elongated shield-shaped horse harness pendant with broken suspension loop at top. The remnants of two rivets are embedded in the pendant (one is visible as the circle about a third of the way down, in line with the hanger). The face bears a design of a fret, and over this a bend chequy. The design on this pendant is clearly visible as a series of fine grooves cut into the metal; what is less clear is whether the areas stained black hold evidence of the original coloration, or are the result of the metal's corrosion. Whatever the case, it is unlikely that this piec…

A cast copper alloy shield-shaped horse harness pendant, withpart of the suspension loop surviving. Remnants of pale blue enamel are visible all over face; the enamel on reverse has lost all original colour and is now visible only as a smooth layer. There is some mechanical damage to face, including three narrow, vertical scrapes; remains of horizontal zig-zag line cut into surface near top still visible. Although this pendant has deteriorated whilst in the ground, much of its enamel is still present as a visible layer when viewed edge-on. It is unfortunate that the colour has leached…

A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The pendant is in poor condition, and corroded, but the face retains much of its enamel. The face has an intricate heraldic design, in the form of three lions ‘passant gardant’, facing left, on a red background. Near the top of the pendant is a blue ‘label’, which originally had two fleurs-de-lis on each of the three down-projecting elements. No gilding survives, but it is likely that the fleurs-de-lis and lions were gold. I. Szymanski has identified this as the arms of the Earls of Lancaster. This artefact dates to the 13th or…
